Quek Kiat Sing (Chinese name: 郭捷忻, pinyin: Guo Jiexin) (born 1972) is a Singaporean artist specializing in Contemporary Chinese Ink. She juxtaposes modern-day subjects with traditional Chinese ink to emphasise the relevancy of Asian culture in contemporary life. She has received numerous awards and has been commended in competitions such as the Sovereign Asian Art Prize, United Overseas Bank Painting of the Year Competition, the Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award and the China ASEAN Youth Artwork Creativity Contest. She has twice been awarded the Freeman Fellowship at Vermont Studio Centre[1], USA; represented Singapore at the ASEAN Cultural Week in Vietnam in 2004; received the India-ASEAN Artist residency at Darjeeling, India in 2012; and has been selected to provide the artwork for Shenton Way MRT Station under the Land Transport Authority's Art-in-Transit[2] programme for the upcoming Thomson Line (projected to be completed in 2019/2020). Her favourite subject matters include the lotus ponds, mundane scenes and people in Singapore, as well as small animals.
Education[edit]
Quek Kiat Sing entered a piece of drawing and won in the Shankar International Art Competition at the age of 16. This sparked off a keen interest in her to pursue art alongside her educational career. She graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Social Science (Honours Degree in Political Science), National University of Singapore, Singapore. She took a bold step to pursue her passion, and attained a Bachelor of Arts (Distinction in Fine Art), Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Australia in 2000.
Artistic Career[edit]
Quek Kiat Sing’s interest in Chinese ink painting began in 1999 when she worked at Telok Kurau Studio. There, she interacted with many established Singaporean artists, including Chua Ek Kay, who eventually became her mentor. They both represented Singapore at the ASEAN Cultural Week in Hanoi, Vietnam in 2004. She also learnt from Tan Siow Aik, a fellow classmate of Chua Ek Kay[3]. Both Chua Ek Kay and Tan Siow Aik were under the tutelage of Fan Chang Tien[4], pioneer artist of Singapore. Under their influence, Quek Kiat Sing employed the use of traditional skill, techniques and aesthetic of Chinese ink to explore contemporary themes and composition. She aspires to localize Chinese ink by turning her paintings into surveys of modern living. Her portrayal of people in Singapore, such as in the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) or at the hawker centre is an example of her attempt. See infobox.
