R Banumathy

R Banumathy (10 April, 1957), daughter and disciple of Sangita Kalanidhi Dr. S. Ramanathan is an acclaimed Carnatic musician hailing from a family of rich musical tradition of India. She is one of the 6th generation representatives of the musical heritage of the Trinity of Carnatic music. She was awarded Gold Medal by the then President of India Shri Shankar Dayal Sharma as a topper in MA (Music) degree from Delhi University. She is an accomplished Veena player. She is the founder-director of alapana Arts in Singapore.

Early Life[edit]

She was born as the 4th child of Dr. S. Ramanathan and Gowri at Triplicane, Chennai. Being led by a legendary and devoted father like Dr. S. Ramanathan, the family grew to be an abode of musicians of high cachet. The rich heritage of musical wealth instilled in her was nurtured with passion and dedication towards the art right from a tender age.She has always followed an authentic Patantharam, which she imbibed through her father and Guru.She has inherited the original versions of Thevaram set to age-old PaNNs and authentic versions of hundreds of Kritis of the Trinity of music, Tyagaraja, Mutthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri, soaked in the essence of Raga music; she, therefore, is a true musician with a repertoire that bridges the two great independently evolved streams of South Indian Music – a living example of unity in diversity through music.

R.Banumathy pursued her Diploma in Music (Veena) from the Madras University. She further continued to earn M.A.(Music) degree from Delhi University.

R.Banumathy is known for her patience in teaching, dedication, recognized style of Veena playing and an authentic ‘Paataanthram’. All these aspects of her personality have earned her a respectable place in the field of Carnatic music.

R. Banumathy began her journey of Vocal and Veena under the tutelage of her father S. Ramanathan and later was trained under the guidance of Dr. S. Jayalakshmi during her Diploma in Music (Veena) from the Madras University. She also had advance training from Ranganayaki Rajagopalan and also has trained under Prof. T.N.Krishnan at Delhi University.

Personal Life[edit]

R. Banumathy was married to V. Raghuraman, a Musician himself, who stands by her as her strength and support in continuing to serve the field of Art.. Their Daughter Smt.Lavanya Raghuraman is a disciple of Padma Bhushan Sri V.P.Dhananjayan and Padma Bhushan Smt Shantha Dhananjayan is a musician and Bharatanatyam dancer.

Achievements[edit]

Mrs. Banumathy was always keen in continuing and preserving the rich culture and heritage and thus founded alapana arts – home of Indian Music and Dance in Singapore in 1999. The institute presently imparts training to over 700 students in Vocal, Veena, Violin, Mridangam & Bharatanatyam.

She has a teaching experience of over 25 years in Veena and Vocal music. She is a senior teacher at alapana arts, besides being its founder Director. She has also taught Veena & Vocal music at the National University of Singapore, Centre for the Arts (CFA) for about 25 years. She also has the credit of teaching Veena at Kalakshetra Chennai (1980-1983).

A sharp Shruthi sense and expertise in Gamakam makes her unique, adding a feather to the crown.

Her contribution to the art field has been immense. She has composed thematic music for performances. Together with Prof. George Hess she had recorded a fusion of Veena music and Guitar playing the ‘Kotakan’ of the Gamelan tradition. She has composed the music for a production entitled ‘Panchali Sapatham’. A Singapore National integration song was tuned by Banumathy and performed at various platforms in Singapore. Her Veena music served as part of the signature tune for the Tamil news of the Singapore TV for over 10 years. She played the Veena accompaniment for a production of M. S. Sheela.

Mrs. Banumathy has the credit of being the first to successfully experiment with the under-saddle pick-ups for Veena for sound amplification. Her article, ‘Gana Kala Niyama – The Time Theory of Music’ was published in 'Gleanings of Indian Music and Art'[1], a book published in 1991 by Sundeep Prakashan in Delhi. She has brought out a book of her own containing a compilation of compositions of Dr. S. Ramanathan to commemorate the Centenary of her Guru in 2017. She is also the author of the book, ‘Sruti Manjari’.[2] which has the
