Rafael DeJesus Peralta, better known as Raphy Santos is a bachatero from the Dominican Republic. Raphy is best known for his hits Enamorado De Tí, Porqué Me Mentiste, El Manicero, and El Homenaje.[1]

Biography[edit]

Raphy was born on July 14th, 1973 to Rafael DeJesus and Tércida Peralta in Mao, a province of Valverde, Dominican Republic. [2] His parents Tercida and Rafael saw Raphy more active than their other children, being the only musician of the family. He was raised in a humble, low-class family. From an early age, he showed his love for music and singing. He began to write poems for his mother Tércida Mercedes. His father Rafael, saw in him a unique ambition compared to his brothers, becoming the only musician in the family. At the age of 11, his mother, without his father's knowledge, enrolled him in piano lessons with the teacher Doña Antonia Arté "Tontón", defying the opinions of his father, who did not agree with Raphy following a musical career, which led them to have certain differences.

He participated in various local voice festivals, gaining knowledge and experience. At school, he was always the first to sing the national anthem. In addition, he was part of the choir of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) and the Technological University of Santiago (UTESA), guided by Professor Luis Flores. His first opportunity to sing in public came thanks to Mr. Rafael Espejo Acosta, Captain of the Dominican Army at the time, who took him to sing at Mao's officers' club. Wherever he was, he always found the opportunity to sing, which eventually led him to meet the Lieutenant Colonel of the Dominican Army at the time, Marino Jiménez Concepción, who introduced him to Luis Vargas, a close friend of his. From then on, whenever Raphy saw a band playing, he would look for a way to join in singing.

On January 1, 1987, Raphy played in his first event as a member of Luís Vargas; In Piloto, a community in Mao, thanking Luís Vargas for giving him the opportunity to be part of his group. At the time, he was the youngest of the group and stayed for approximately 8 years. Raphy is recognized as the pioneer in introducing electronic drums in bachata. Then, in mid-1993, he joined Raulin Rodríguez's group in which he participated in the production "Regresa Amor", but it only lasted approximately three months since he was being requested to play in Anthony Santos' group. Raphy gained many experiences and had the opportunity to lead Anthony's group, gaining knowledge to later carry out his own project. His first album "Con Sentimiento Y Ternura" in 1995, sponsored and supported by businessman Andrés Rodríguez (Platano Productions), record label with which he recorded his first five productions.

Before recording his first album Con Sentimiento Y Ternura at the end of 1995, Raphy lost his mother to cancer being only 39 years of age earlier that same year. She was the most important and influential person in his life and many songs and poems were made in dedication to her. Raphy had disappeared for 10 days until Antony Santos came to his house to bring him back to the group, since Raphy was the one who played first guitar for him. Raphy would later pay homage to his mother on the song titled Mi Viaje Triste.

After Raphy's first hit, "Porqué Me Mentiste", he was well supported by many radio stations and hosts including Anthony Rodriguez and Manny Mendez. The second album that Raphy Santos would record would be Enamorado De Tí in 1997 and became a huge hit. Some well known hits from this album include Enamorado De Tí, No Puedo Vivír Sin Tí, Sólo Manda el Corazón, and Hoy Quiero Cantarte A Tí Papá, which was a song dedicated to his father, even though he did not have significant influence on Raphy's musical career.

Raphy is also known for being the pioneer in recording tributes to classic bachata artists. Andrés Rodríguez is like a brother to Raphy, since he was the person who gave him the opportunity to record and produce his albums. In addition to "Con Sentimiento Y Ternura", he also recorded "Enamorado De Tí", "Mi País – El Homenaje", "No Podrás Engañarme" and "Clásicos De La Provincia".

In the year 2015, Raphy recorded his first album under his own record label "Raya Music", titled "Otra Vez". Currently, he continues to record his songs under his label, working on his newest production "Humildemente Yo!" in 2022.
