Raritan Headwaters Association, also known as RHA, is an environmental non-profit organization established in 1959 to protect the water and land resources around the Raritan river basin in New Jersey. For over 60 years, RHA has served as the watchdog[1] for the 470-square-mile North and South Branch Raritan watershed, a region covering 38 municipalities in New Jersey's Hunterdon, Somerset and Morris counties. RHA's key activities include stream monitoring,[2] land preservation, advocacy and well-testing, and regularly mobilizes one of the largest voluntary workforces in the country.[3][4] The Raritan river and its numerous tributaries provide water to over 1.5 million residents across the state of New Jersey.

Focus areas[edit]

  • Monitoring the health of surface water and groundwater across the region
  • Educating public and the youth[5] about the impact of their actions on water resources
  • Creating community initiatives and engage citizen volunteers[6] to clean water streams, preserve and steward critical watershed lands
  • Advocating the need for sustainability with stakeholders and elected officials
  • Conducting and leading research on water conservation in partnership with leading American universities
