Rasha Khayat

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Rasha Khayat is an Arabic-English-German translator and author currently living in Hamburg, Germany. She has been called a representative of the "Migrutanten," a group of young, debuting German authors with a migration background.[1]

Life[edit]

Early Childhood and Family[edit]

Rasha Khayat was born in 1978 in Dortmund, Germany.[2] Her mother is German by birth, and her father was born and raised in Saudi Arabia.[3] Her father was the recipient of a Saudi state-sponsored program which provided funds for young men to study abroad. Monetary repayment was waived by the state for graduates who returned to Saudi Arabia and worked in their education-related field.[4] Her parents met in Germany while her father was a student.

In 1981, when Khayat was three years old her family moved to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.[4] The family lived there until she was eleven years old. In 1988 her family made the decision to move back to Germany because of the outbreak of political tensions and acts of war within the Middle-East.[4]

Her family background is diverse. In her blog West-östliche Diva, Khayat writes: “I am the descendant of a family made up of Muslims and Catholics and Protestant Christians from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Silesia and the Ruhr area".[5]

Education[edit]

In 1999 she received her high school diploma (Abitur) from the Ratsgymnasium in Gladbeck.[6] She continued her education at the Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn, where she studied comparative literature, modern German literature and philosophy.[7] In 2005 she completed a traineeship in the editorial department of Rohwohlt Verlag.[8]

Career[edit]

Since 2005, Khayat has lived in Hamburg, Germany where she works as a freelance author, lecturer, and translator. [9] She works with refugees and the homeless as a volunteer.[10] In 2010 she started her blog, "West-östliche Diva: Das deutsche Fenster zu Arabistan"" (“West-eastern Diva – A German Window to Arabistan”).

She was awarded a literary residence at the OMI International Arts Center, Ledig House in New York City in 2017.[11]

Throughout her career as a translator she has translated fiction and drama from English and Arabic into German.[12] Though she would like to have the opportunity to translate more Arabic literature, there has not been much of a market for this in Germany.[13]

Reviews[edit]

“Khayat has at her command an ideologically unobstructed perspective. Her straight-as-an-arrow novel attempts to decrease the severity of various prejudices, while simultaneously relativizing the unconditional affirmation of the West. This can only help in a time like this.” Christoph Schröder, Die Zeit[19]

“In her very timely book, Rasha Khayat memorably describes the rootlessness, uncertainty, and dilemmas faced by the second generation of immigrants.” - Petra Pluwatsch, Kölner Stadtanzeiger[20]

“A debut novel on an urgently critical topic with a very deliberate, unconventional view of the events.” - Julya Rabinowich, Der Standard[21]

“With Rasha Khayat, a strong, new voice has arrived in literature. Reflecting great intelligence, wit, and never-ending beauty, she tells of a world, the likes of which we have never heard of before. Simply marvelous.” - Olga Grjasnowa[22]
