Founded in 2012, Recycell Inc. is a Quebec-based.[1] company that buys, sells, and resells cell phones (mobile phones) in pursuit of sustainable development — as much for the customer as for the environment.[2]

History[edit]

Recycell Inc. was founded in 2012 by Mélissa Bourque[3]. 1st September 2014, Recycell Inc. was acquired by Luc Beaulieu and Nathalie Gosselin.[4] [5] In 2018, Recycell Inc. comprises two shareholders and two employees.

Market and Sales Revenues[edit]

The company's sales revenues have quadrupled since 2014. In 2015, 75% of Recycell sales are based in Quebec[6]

The Environmental Impact of Cell Phones[edit]

Cell phones gave a lifespan of about a decade.[7] On the other hand, they’re completely outmoded after seven years. This means that new technologies and updates become incompatible with these cell phones. Most cell phone providers are quick to replace older models, causing what you might call planned obsolescence. Their contracts often offer new models after only two years of use. This creates a lot of waste and, more importantly, a lot of trash that has an impact on the environment. In Canada, around 20 kg of electronic waste is produced per person each year — a large portion of this is from cell phones that are so frequently switched out.[8]

Services[edit]

Recycell Inc. is recycling cell phones: purchase batches of cell phones acquired by companies and put them back in working order for reuse[9]. In 2017 alone, this solution successfully salvaged 5000 cell phones and gave them a second life.

For the moment, Recycell Inc. is not collecting cell phones from individuals. Cell phones are bought by the lot from companies that use them for work purposes.
