Redkite (formerly The Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund for Children in Australia) is an Australian charity founded in 1983, supporting children and young people with cancer and their families.

History[edit]

The charity that eventually became Redkite was founded by Sylvia Darley OBE, the secretary and unofficial manager of Sir Malcolm Sargent for the last 20 years of his life. Sir Malcolm was a British conductor, organist and composer and the chief conductor of the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts (The Proms). Malcolm toured Australia in 1936 for the first time, making several more visits before his death from cancer on 3 October 1967.

A year later, in 1968, Sylvia Darley founded The Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund for Children (now CLIC Sargent) in the UK. Fifteen years later, in August 1983, the charity’s trustees established The Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund for Children in New South Wales, Australia. The charity was expanded into Queensland in 2001. Separate chapters were then created in Victoria in 1989 and Western Australia in 1991. Each of the Australian chapters raised money to fund financial assistance grants for the families of children with cancer. In 2005, chapters of The Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund for Children in Australia in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia merged. They were joined by Victoria in 2007 and rebranded as a single organisation called Redkite. Today, Redkite operates as a national non-for-profit organisation with its headquarters in Sydney and three additional offices in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.
