Renée Marie Gouraud d’Ablancourt was a French author of sentimental, historical, and science fiction novels. Her pen name was Renée Marie Gouraud d'Ablancourt, which partly used her married name (married to Georges François Marie Lucien Gouraud in 1872) and partly used her mother's name, Julie Clotilde Emerance Perrot d'Ablancourt. Born Marie Renée Joséphine Meslet on October 1, 1853, in Angers, and died on May 13, 1941, in La Meignanne, where she spent her final days at the Château de La Filotière.[1]

Biography[edit]

Renée and Georges settled down first in Limoges before returning to Anjou, where they lived at the Château de La Filotière, a place that Renée particularly cherished. They had four children: Renée (1873), Paul (1874), Marie Clotilde (1876), and Marie Cécile (1878). In 1888, the couple acquired the Château du Plessis-Macé, which they occupied until 1908. The family also owned a pied-à-terre in Paris, where Renée became a highly sought-after personality in Parisian high society.

Renée Gouraud d’Ablancourt wrote extensively for Christian publishers, regional newspapers, and fashion magazines, publishing short stories and popular novels. She was published by Hirt, La Librairie des saints pères, J. Siraudeau in Angers, and others.

In 1909, she published the stories of L'Oiselle, Véga de Ortega, in La Mode du Petit Journal (supplement), featuring an avant-garde heroine who transforms into a superhero thanks to her Lady-Bird costume. She has a range of gadgets, including a night-vision system and pills that allow her to stay awake. Her stories were republished in 1912 under the title "Véga la magicienne".
