Renate Soulen, MD, FSIR

Renate L. Soulen, MD, FSIR, (b. 6/10/1933) is an American Physician. During the 1960's and 70's, she was an early practitioner of a new subspecialty of radiology, Interventional Radiology.

Early life and Education: Dr. Soulen obtained her medical degree from the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, now Drexel University College of Medicine, in 1957. She completed a residency in radiology at Thomas Jefferson University Medical College in 1963.

Early Career: Dr. Soulen spent the first 22 years of her career as a cardiovascular interventional radiologist at Temple University, from 1969 to 1985. She served as section chief from 1985. In addition to being a founding member of the Philadelphia Angio Club and an advocate for women in medicine, Dr. Soulen was one of only three of the founding fellows of Society for Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (now Society of Interventional Radiology, SIR). In 1978, she served as chair for the society’s third annual meeting (4).

Research: Dr. Soulen published her research in the Journal of the American Heart Association, CHEST, Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, The American Journal of Cardiology, and the New England Journal of Medicine, among others.

Late Career: In 1989 Dr. Soulen became a professor of radiology at Wayne State University. She served as director of magnetic resonance imaging at the Detroit Medical Center where she practiced until she retired in 2005.

In 2000, she was awarded the President’s Award by the American Association of Women Radiologists(3). In 2018, she was awarded the Gold Medal by the Society of Interventional Radiology (1). In addition to her other honors, she is the 2018 invited Women in Interventional Radiology InspIRed Lecturer (2).
