Ross Campbell (born 25 June 1957) is an International Singing Specialist, Vocal Coach and Author. He is currently a Professor of Singing at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and Director & Head of Singing & Musical Theatre at the Musical Theatre UK Ltd (London).. He is also Consultant to Musical Theatre Poland (MTP).

Background

Ross Campbell studied at the Royal College of Music in London and finished following a scholarship to Mozarteum University Salzburg. During his time at the RCM, he won numerous awards and was invited to sing in Opera, Oratorio, and as a Concert Artist throughout many countries including the UK, Germany, Austria, France, Switzlerland, South East Asia and Japan. He went on to create numerous roles for World Premieres, most notably the character of Saul/Paul ‘The Promise’ (1997) at London’s Southbank Centre. He was also founder of The Kensington Consort and regularly sang on live broadcasts with the BBC Radio and TV, as well as Radio France.

Career

Ross was Head of Singing and Music at Guildford School of Acting at the University of Surrey] until December 2011. It was here that he created the internationally recognised MA degree course in the Practice of Voice & Singing (MA POVAS). He is currently teaching Singing in the Musical Theatre Department at the Royal Academy of Music in London. His students have continuously appeared West End Musicals and UK and International Tours. His research in professional singing is well-known and has taken him to training professionals worldwide in both musical theatre and commercial sounds, mostly classical. His combined works of lectures and performances have taken him to Seminars and Conferences in China, Borneo, Malta, Singapore and Malaysia. He has extensive experience in creating and leading courses at all higher academic levels.

Music Education Forum in Beijing, 2010

In December 2010, Ross was invited to speak at the ‘Music Education Forum’ in Beijing. Following on, he created and launched the new Syllabus of Exams in Hong Kong and Macau, implementing workshops and master-classes for students and teachers at the same time. A year later, he returned to the forum and subsequently delivered the paper “With One Voice – The Classical Sound & Musical Theatre Singing”.

Author Works

In 2005, the ABRSM commissioned Ross to produce five anthologies of write performance and study notes which serve Grades 1 to 5. In 2009, he went on to receive the prestigious MIA Award for ‘Best Classical Publication’. In late 2017, Campbell released the 226-page hardback edition of "Singing – An Extensive Handbook For All Singers And Their Teachers - combining training, instruction and research to improve all types of singing. In April 2018, the book was critically acclaimed by Pop & Rock Arts Critic Will Hodgkinson for The Times, named "Can a singing teacher to the stars cure our critic’s tuneless warble?"[1]
