Royal Visit to New Zealand 1974[edit]

Purpose Queen Elizabeth 11 and her husband Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh visited New Zealand in 1974 (from the 30th of January to the 8th of February). The primary purpose of the visit was to open the Commonwealth Games being hosted in Christchurch at the QE11 Park which was named in her honour. Princess Anne and her husband Captain Mark Phillips also attended the opening ceremony. Prior to travelling to Christchurch the Queen and the Duke visited the newly opened Manukau City Mall in Auckland to view the stained glass feature window (Rainbow) created by New Zealand artist Shona MacFarlane. The royal couple were hosted by Manukau's Mayor Lloyd Elsmore.
