Ruqqaya Hashmi

Ruqqaya Hashmi is a Pakistani politician. She was a member of the provincial assembly of Balochistan from 2008 to 2013.

Biography[edit]

Hashmi is originally from the Shia community of Hazara and was a doctor in the Pakistan Army Medical Corps. She left her career as a physician and joined politics in the military era of Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.[citation needed]

She has four children. Her husband is a veteran politician-cum-businessman who has also been a member of the Pakistani Senate.[1]

Politics[edit]

She held various social and political positions since then. She was elected as a Member of the Balochistan Assembly in 2008.[2] Hashmi fought for a seat as a member of the Pakistan National Assembly from her stronghold Hazara Community but lost in the Quetta City area where Hazara Shias are subject to local biases and prejudices. Hazara Shia's mass killings in the hands of suicide bombers of the Taliban and Islamist fundamentalists.

She was elected on party ticket from Pakistan Muslim League ticket in 2008.

She supports the rights of women on issues related to discrimination based on gender, belief, sect, caste and religion.[1]
