Safe by Design

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Safe by Design (SbD) is an approach that identifies potential health and environmental risks of substances, materials or products at an early phase of the development process. Safe by Design encourages industry to think about safety when they are developing a new product or material. The SbD approach is also referred to as Safer by Design. The related concept of Safety by Design is sometimes considered synonymous to Safe by Design, but is also used as a synonym of Prevention through design, a concept that focusses on occupational risk reduction.

Origin[edit]

The SbD concept had been used for decades in construction and engineering, but can also be applied in other fields. In the last five years, the European Commission has started funding projects which investigate how the SbD concept can be applied in nanotechnology.

Tools[edit]

SbD identifies important technology-related safety questions that need to be addressed in the different stages of product development to identify, assess, monitor, control, evaluate and manage potential risks.

When the designers think about potential safety hazards when developing a new product or material, they can identify and reduce safety hazards that might occur to people and the environment that might occur during the product’s life cycle, such as during the construction, use, maintenance and deconstruction.

Whereas current research and development processes often address safety aspects once the product is ready to be market, the SbD concept encourages designers to think about technology-related safety aspects in the early stages of the design process of a new product or material. Potential safety hazards can then be identified early in the innovation process. By integrating SbD early in research & development process, companies can detect potential safety risks early, thereby saving time and money before entering the development phase.

Tools supporting SbD implementation are collected in the SIA Toolbox or the SbD Implementation Platform can be used, both developed within the EU-project NanoReg2.[1]
