Samrawit Sisay Birara
Samrawit Sisay Birara, (Amharic: ሳምራዊት ሲሳይ ቢራራ; born 1992 G.C.) is an Ethiopian actress and director. She has worked in radio, TV series, feature films, TV ads, music clips and theaters. Her breakout role came on the hit EBC TV show called Meleket (Amharic:መለከት) drama where she played a supporting role. She became a household name when she played the nationally acclaimed, title and main character Zara (Amharic:ዛራ)[1] as the voice dub actor in Zara and Chandra on Kana TV.
Early life[edit]
Samrawit was born and raised in Bishoftu, 42 km south of the capital city of Addis Ababa. She was second to last of her siblings. She was raised by her mother, after the death of her Father at the age of twelve.[2] Her love of performing arts started in adolescence, where she was an avid member and participant of her community youth art group. during this stage she fell in love with writing and poetry.
Education[edit]
After completing her primary and secondary level education, she joined the country's prestigious Addis Ababa University, where she majored in theatrical arts for her undergraduate studies. She has further taken advanced training from University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, in directing, editing, acting, script writing and short film production.
Career[edit]
She started her work as an assistant and later moved to co-hosting on FM 97.1 national radio station. She later made her debut on TV, as a supporting actress on the hit EBC TV show Meleket. This transition has helped her grab some other performances in TV commercials, music clips and leading role in feature films. Her breakout role came in the form of voice dubbing actress in Kana TV's Zara and Chandera (Amharic:ዛራ እና ቻንድራ), where she played the leading role and title character.
After a successful run in front of the camera, Samrawit experimented on working behind the camera where she has directed high level TV series works such as Inheritance (Amharic: ውርስ ) and Ye Egna (Amharic: የኛ)
She now has her own Advertisement and Media company , where she works with national and international clients and counterparts in making documentaries, advertisements and music videos for international artists.
