Gameplay[edit]

Sand is the Soul is a 2D souls-like beat 'em up video game with deep role-playing mechanics and an open world to traverse. The player has to navigate the land and find a way to fulfill his diplomatic role or choose one of many available destinies.[1]

The game records even the smallest of the playerís choices, making every playthrough distinct from the other. The player can be a loyal messenger or go totally rogue and become a wanted person in the township. If the messenger becomes addicted to the Sand, he can fall victim to the Sand Curse. And the more addicted he is, the more distorted and gory the world around him becomes as hallucinations take over his mind. The Karma and Sanity systems are only two of many intertwining and sophisticated mechanics working with the player to determine the consequences of his choices.

Similar to other souls-like games, death does not result in a game over screen but the character re-spawns in a safe place. However, in exchange, he is more addicted to the Sand. There is the possibility, very early in the game, to choose to not activate this mechanism and this will result in turning into an intense and very difficult roguelike game.

The battle system is a mix of souls-like fighting with a beat 'em up brawler-type game. There are three important factors to surviving the combat: speed, range and stamina. The player has to maintain the correct distance from the enemy according to the chosen fighting style and keep his stamina in check. Getting low on stamina will cause fatigue and leave him open to attacks.

The player starts with the default Outland Cane style which is not very fast but good for keeping enemies at a distance. Enemies differ in size, speed and skill and that's why it's crucial to adapt to the situation on the field and learn the different fighting styles that can be obtained during the course of the adventure.

The Slip is a primary defensive tool given to the player. A regular evasion decreases stamina and is a quick backwards dodge. However, if timed perfectly, the messenger activates Slip, which opens up a counter window. The player will recognize it by an overlaying golden hued filter and a different animation with a slo-mo zoom sequence. During the slip the player has two options. He can strike with a reverse or forward counter which is stronger than a regular strike but the enemy is able to move out of the way of the attack. The second possibility is to deal a pointblank shot with a gun. It does massive damage and also has a large AOE but it is very hard to pull off. Missing the small activation window will result in a normal and very slow firearm shot which leaves the player open to attacks.

Mastering The Slip enables the player to combine attacks to create devastating combos.

Synopsis[edit]

Setting[edit]

With the Outland wars now over, an illusion of peace has ensued. The autonomy of Crosshill was founded soon after the war and with it, an exclusive privilege that came with the discovery of the pollen of the drakeflower, now known as the Sand. For years Crosshill gained its respect for being the sole supplier of power and the townshipís wealth and breakthroughs in technology were second to none. Things have changed as of late... an unspeakable crisis has struck Crosshill and hundreds are flooding the borders in a mass exodus. The transfer of electric power to other nations has been halted, leading to harsh and tense diplomatic relations. Missionaries of diplomatic status have been dispatched in order to find out what has become of Crosshill in a bleak attempt to remedy the deteriorating situation.

Open World[edit]

The Map is divided into 2 main areas: The Frontier and the Township of Crosshill. The Frontier is overseen by the Order which consists of hunters, striders and judges, who have a strong connection with Gaea, whereas the Township has regular municipal forces known as the Watch. They both answer to different powers despite having similar goals. The Order has sworn to protect the natural balance of the Frontier and oversee the Sand harvests at the Northern Gates. They operate outside the jurisdiction of the municipalities, worship the Great Dame, Gaea, and have a collective hive mind. The Sand is a resource crucial to the lore and exclusive to Crosshill. In processed form, the Sand generates electricity. In its raw form it can be a golden solution to many of manís illnesses, from a simple headache to the flu or any other disease... even death. While the Sand seems like the loose equivalent of XIX century morphine in the Crosshill lore, abuse and addiction are possible and many of the locals succumb to madness under its influence.[2]
