The Sandy Hill Minor Hockey Association (SHMHA) is an important part of the Sandy Hill community and surrounding neighbourhoods. It is the home association for all players whose official residence is within the areas of Sandy Hill, New Edinburgh, Lindenlea, Rockcliffe Park, Lower Town, or Old Ottawa East/Brantwood Park. It is made up exclusively of volunteers from the coaches on the ice, to the managers and trainers, to the many association volunteers, to the association executive.

The SHMHA is a member of Hockey Canada, the governing body of amateur hockey in Canada. It is part of District B (Bytown District), of the Ottawa District Minor Hockey Association (ODMHA) and of the Ottawa District Hockey Association (ODHA). The association conducts itself in accordance with these governing bodies and approved Hockey Canada standards.

Jersey crest[edit]

This facial expression is defensive and gives warning to other wolves to be cautious.

SHMHA jerseys sport the gray wolf as their crest. Wolves are legendary because of their spine-tingling howl, which they use to communicate. A lone wolf howls to attract the attention of his pack, while communal howls may send territorial messages from one pack to another. Wolves are the largest members of the dog family. Wolves and humans have a long adversarial history. Wolves are considered one of the animal world's most fearsome natural villains.

Wolves live and hunt in packs of around six to ten animals. They are known to roam large distances, perhaps 12 miles (20 kilometers) in a single day. These social animals cooperate on their preferred prey—large animals such as deer, elk, and moose. When they are successful, wolves do not eat in moderation. A single wolf can consume 20 pounds (9 kilograms) of raw meat at a sitting.

Rinks used[edit]

The SHMHA uses the Sandy Hill Arena ("The Wolf's Den") at 60 Mann Avenue as its primary training and home game arena. It also uses Bernard Grandmaître Arena in Vanier for training and home games.

Internet presence[edit]

The SHMHA uses the internet to communicate to both players and parents via www.sandyhillhockey.ca as well as www.shmha.ca.

SHMHA uses the Hockey Canada division definitions as follows:
