The Santa Cruz 70 (SC-70) is a class of ultra-light displacement (ULDB) keelboats designed for offshore ocean racing by Bill Lee and built by Hilltop Yachts. The SC-70 was created after the success of Merlin[1][dead link][2][dead link], and led the way in the production of "Sleds": large, fast, light, keel boats capable of surfing downwind. The SC-70 is not a strict one-design class; most of the yachts differ slightly in deck layout, cabin configuration, sail plan, and appendages. Despite these "custom" features, most SC-70's sail competitively in fleets that utilize a rating rule such as the offshore racing rule (ORR) to account for differences in performance. [3] The Great Lakes 70's Sailing Association is once such fleet, where as many as 13 SC-70s have raced together on Lakes Michigan, Huron, and Superior.[4] Additional fleets found on the west coast of the United States include Santa Cruz 70's with yachts of a similar design.
