Sapling was founded in 2016 by Bart Macdonald and Andy Crebar. Both founders have backgrounds in the people operations profession, specializing in the internet, technology and financial services sector. Sapling is headquartered in San Francisco, CA, with a customer advisory board including: Matt Hoffman, Cara Brennan, Jenilee Deal, Jeff Diana, Robby Peters, and Peter Cassidy. In 2016, Sapling was the first company accepted into the PeopleTech Partners - a San-Francisco based incubator for HR 2.0 technologies.

Sapling was launched as a software solution to streamline onboarding for high-growth organizations with distributed workforces. Then in 2017, Sapling evolved into a broader core HR HRIS platform. The platform’s functionalities include time off tracking, interactive organizational charts, and calendaring.

Sapling is an Employee Onboarding and Core HR Software as A Service. Its features include an employee service portal, time off tracking, interactive organizational chart. Sapling’s also has automated workflows, document and email templates, and trigger notifications.
