Scifidelity Orchestra is a vibrant jazz band rooted in the region of Međimurje, Croatia, comprising a group of talented musicians. Established in 2013. the band is distinguished by its original compositions, aiming to express deep emotions, transmit positive energy, and spread joy among its audience.
History and Formation[edit]
Scifidelity Orchestra was founded in 2013 with the idea of composing and performing original music, primarily as a means of expression, but also of transmitting positive energy and cheering people up. They started their career on the streets of Zagreb, and in the meantime they performed in many places in Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Hungary, Italy, Austria and Germany, sometimes on the street, sometimes in clubs and at festivals. In 2017, they reached the finals of Supertalent in Croatia. The debut album "Holiday Special" was nominated for Porin 2020. They are happy to collaborate with many artists on the scene, and the current line-up consists of four brothers Filip Horvat ( alto trombone), Stjepan Horvat (double bass), Benjamin Horvat (banjo) Ruben Horvat ( tenor trombone) and Robert Pajić (clarinet), David Mesarić (drums/washboard). The ensemble's unique name reflects their passion for science fiction and fidelity to jazz music.
Musical Journey[edit]
The orchestra's members are all graduates of the high school of music. Some pursued further music education to enhance their musical prowess. Robert and Stjepan earned their master's degrees at the Academy of Music in Zagreb, collaborating closely with Professor Saša Nestorović.
All members of the orchestra share a deep-rooted connection with jazz, nurtured since their childhood. Many of them honed their skills in the Big Band Čakovec, further solidifying their commitment to professional music careers. Their collective love for jazz, coupled with their desire to communicate their musical expressions to the world, led to the formation of the Scifidelity Orchestra.
Music Releases and Collaboration[edit]
Their album titled "Coast" released in 2017. showcases their musical ingenuity. One of the defining features of their compositions is the spontaneity and improvisational nature, ensuring that no two renditions of a composition are ever the same.
In 2018. they released a single called "Macho". On the single was working Miroslav Lesić, who is also winner of the "Status" award for the best guitarist in the category of fun, pop, rock and urban music.
"Holiday Special" released in 2019. features fourteen jazzy/funky instrumentals that host many interesting guests. The album was nominated for the Porin award for the best instrumental album of 2019.
2020. they joined forces with the musician Iggy Biznis from Zagreb, and through humorous lyrics and suitable music recorded the single "Mašem snovima (Božićna)".
For the most current album "Adventures of Billy Blaze" released in 2022. the guys from Scifidelity Orchestra drew inspiration from the computer game "Commander Keen" from the 90s of the last century. In collaboration with the original composer of the background music for the said computer game, Robert "Bobby" Prince III (Bobby Prince). Somewhat forgotten pieces of music that have been gathering digital dust for thirty years are taking on a "live" form for the first time in history, which also had their first official release in Croatia.
In one of his Facebook posts, the composer enthusiastically wrote: "...the song... (You Got To Eat Your Vegetables) ...was recorded by the Scifidelity Orchestra. It's the best recording of that song ever. It is performed as it should always be performed -- perfectly imperfect!” (...the song (You Got To Eat Your Vegetables) recorded by Scifideilty Orchestra. The best recording of that song ever. It was performed exactly the way it was always meant to be performed - perfectly imperfect!)"
"You could say that we really gave ourselves a breather in terms of music and creativity. Many pieces were created during Corona, when we performed little and spent a lot of time in the studio, so all kinds of combinations came to mind. Almost two years in the making, we are proud to present our new material." - said Filip Horvat.
From beatbox to experimental metal objects, the album is full of interesting sounds that quite deftly fit into the infectious up-beat energy of the Scifidelity Orchestra.
Musical Style and Influence[edit]
The orchestra specializes from old-time jazz ( a genre predating the bebop era ) all the way to modern style jazz music. Their music, characterized by its entertaining and commercial appeal, reflects their dedication to the craft and their desire to bring joy to audiences.
