ServiceSeeking.com.au is an online marketplace that offers quotes and price comparison services to consumers and businesses. It was founded in 2007 by Jeremy Levitt, Oliver Pennington, and Daniel Sabados. In 2017, it registered 20,000 monthly paying customers in Australia and fielded 10 million quotes.[1]

History[edit]

In its first year of operation (2007), ServiceSeeking.com.au did not charge for its services; the initial capital came from the co-founders, their families and friends.[2][3] Its main revenue comes from the businesses who are required to pay a monthly membership. Two years later, the founders partnered with TrueLocal and integrated to their platform the TrueLocal's "Get Quotes" feature, enabling consumers to post a job or service and business to send their quotes. Since then, alliance partnerships have been formed with Ninemsn, Yahoo!7, NRMA, eBay, Realestate.com.au, 1Form and RP Data.[4][5]

In 2014, an iPhone app was released providing the same features as their website platform. An app for Android devices was followed in 2018.[6]

In 2017, the "Instaquotes" feature was introduced, allowing businesses to automatically submit a standard quote on every lead matching predetermined settings.[7]

Services[edit]

ServiceSeeking.com.au provides an online trading platform for consumers and businesses to trade by enabling the former to list their jobs and allowing the latter to quote on them. Its primary focus is on building, construction and household trades, including plumbing, electrical services and concreting. Other job categories include accounting, building, graphic design, photography and furniture removal. As of 2018, only local traders with an Australian Business Number are allowed to register and are required to complete a verification process by taking an online course about quoting and responding to customers.

In addition, the company collects pricing data from the quotes that are submitted and produces pricing guides detailing the lowest, average and highest prices charged for the various services procured through its website, providing adequate statistical analysis for market research purposes.[8][9][10]

Legal Issues[edit]

2018 allegations over user reviews[edit]

In March 2018, concerns were raised over a possible breach of the Competition and Consumer Act with the inclusion of the "Fast Feedback" feature, introduced in mid-2016. Since then, The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has been investigating the claims and cooperating with the founders of ServiceSeeking.com.au.[11]

2018 fine for spam and privacy breach[edit]

In July 2018, the Australian Communications and Media Authority fined ServiceSeeking.com.au for failing to comply with privacy and spam laws.[12]

Awards[edit]

ServiceSeeking.com.au has been nominated and competed for the following awards:

  • Finalist in Cool Company Awards 2011[13]
  • Finalist in the City of Sydney Business Awards 2012[14]
  • 18th in the Start Up Smart Awards 2012[15]
