Company[edit]

Seven Marine was founded in 2010 by Rick Davis, who previously served for several years as a senior executive at Mercury Marine . Davis' goal was to develop and build the world's most powerful outboard motor, which was unveiled in 2011 as "557". In 2015, the company announced an upgraded version of the "557" engine labeled "627".[2]

Seven Marine has operations in Florida , the US East Coast, Sint Maarten and Abu Dhabi .

On July 6, 2017, it was announced that Volvo-Penta will become the principal owner of Seven Marine.[3]

Seven Marine 557[edit]

The Seven Marine "557" is a large outboard motor for boats with a minimum length of 27 feet (about 8 meters). The type designation refers to the power of 409 kW (557 hp ) on the propeller shaft. The development began in August 2010 and already in mid-February 2011, the concept was presented in collaboration with the US boat manufacturer Intrepid Powerboats at the Miami International Boat Show. In March 2012, which reached "557" series production.

As a drive unit of the "557" is a V-eight-cylinder - Small block engine of the type gene IV LS9 of General Motors with a displacement of 6.2 liters and supercharging is used, which - in contrast to the conventional design with outboard motors - horizontally above the shaft is installed.

In order to be able to use the engine for the employment in the navigation, engine cooling and exhaust system had to be redeveloped to a large extent. The cooling system consists of a primary and a secondary circuit as well as a heat exchanger. This prevents saline water from entering the cooling channels of the engine block. In order to keep the dimensions of the heat exchanger as low as possible, the engine itself is cooled with ethylene glycol . The exhaust system has two exposed tailpipes above the waterline. The power is transmitted via an electronically controlled, five-disc clutch in the oil bath developed by ZF Friedrichshafen .[4]

The "557" can be operated with different propeller configurations as a single and multi-engine system. In order to reduce the wheel effect in a single-engine system, the engine is also offered since 2014 under the name "557CR" ("contra-rotating") with counter-rotating 5-blade coaxial propellers. With single propeller and a shaft length of 508 mm (20 inches) weighs the outboard 597 kg.[5]
