Shake Up The Establishment

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Shake Up The Establishment (SUTE) is a youth-led, Canadian registered non-profit organization dedicated to climate justice work. Founded in April 2019 as a grassroots initiative focused on putting climate change at the forefront of the 2019 Canadian federal election, SUTE worked with groups such as Patagonia Toronto, Climate Strike Canada and local Fridays for Future chapters to help increased informed voting. Following the election, the group went on hiatus to re-group. In April 2020, under the leadership of original co-founders, Manvi Bhalla and Janaya Campbell, Dr. Komil Bhalla on their Board of Directors and their Executive Committee members Samantha Casey, Christina Di Carlo and John O'Connor, SUTE re-emerged as a community-driven, evidence-informed and equity-centred non-partisan organization dedicated to climate justice work. The group describes that they aim to, "make credible, evidence-informed information readily available to the Canadian population to promote informed voting, advocacy practices, and political accountability surrounding human and social justice issues that are exacerbated by the climate crisis".[1]. They describe that their approach involves collaborating directly with groups and communities that are working to address injustices and that they continue to partake in educational initiatives and awareness campaigns to promote environment and climate literacy and non-partisan political action [1]

Notably, the leadership of SUTE (Manvi Bhalla, Janaya Campbell, Christina Di Carlo and Samantha Casey) were recognized as Top 30 Under 30 Sustainability Leaders in Canada [2] and Manvi Bhalla and Samantha Casey were also both recognized as Top 25 Under 25 Environmentalists in Canada [3] in 2020. SUTE has also received widespread media coverage for their work; including but not limited to,

  • In October 2019, they were profiled in This Magazine [4], in the National Observer [5], the Coast [6] and on CBC Daybreak South with Chris Walker [7] for their work surrounding the federal election
  • In September 2020, President Manvi Bhalla was interviewed to speak on the global climate strikes in the National Observer[8]
  • In November 2020, as members of the National Anti-Environmental Racism Coalition, led by Dr. Ingrid Waldron and Naolo Charles, SUTE co-signed an urgent letter for Bill C-230 in the Nova Scotia Advocate[9]
  • In February 2021, President and Co-founder Manvi Bhalla was interviewed on how she helped found and create SUTE, alongside what she brings into the space from her research in public health[10]
  • In February 2021, SUTE stood in solidarity against the unjust treatment of fellow youth climate justice organizer, Disha Ravi of Fridays for Future India[11]
  • In March 2021, ahead of the third reading of Bill C-230, SUTE provided a statement in support of the bill alongside members of the National Anti-Environmental Racism Coalition[12]
  • In August 2021, SUTE political researcher, Lucia Fernandez was interviewed by CBC National [13] about being a first time voter who was putting climate justice first
