Dr. Shreenivas (30 December 1919 -- 11 November 2010) was an Indian cardiologist, inventor, spiritual thinker and author born in Garhasisai village in the Samastipur district (then in the Darbhanga district) in Bihar, India. He was born to father Rampyare Sharan Singh, a practitioner of traditional medicine, and mother Kamla Devi. He is considered the first cardiologist of India and was honoured by the Department of Post, Government of India for his achievements with a Special Cover postage stamp.[1]

Education[edit]

Dr. Shreenivas finished his schooling from King Edward English High School at Samastipur in 1936. He was a brilliant student and had started receiving scholarships since the time he was in standard eight. He did his I.Sc. from Patna Science College and M.B.B.S. from the Prince of Wales Medical College and Hospital (now known as the Patna Medical College and Hospital). He was awarded the gold medal for securing the highest marks in M.B.B.S. In 1948, he was awarded the Ella Lyman Cabot Fellowship for studying at Harvard University where he obtained his M.D. and D.Sc. degrees. He was also a Haskell Fellow at the University of Kansas. He was the only Indian to be trained under Paul Dudley White, the father of modern cardiology, at Harvard University.

Contributions[edit]

Cardiology[edit]

Dr. Shreenivas has many important contributions in the field of cardiology to his name. He is credited with the research done for the EV method of identification -- a work that established that every individual has a different signature for ECG (Echocardiography) and EVG (Electrovectercardiogram). This method of identification is still being used by the Scotland Yard. Dr. Shreenivas was the first person to bring the ECG machine to India. He later went on to establish the Indira Gandhi Institute of Cardiology[2] at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). When Dr. Shreenivas had joined the PMCH, the hospital did not have a designated cardiology department -- heart patients were simply treated in the general ward. Dr. Shreenivas went beyond the call of his duty and started a cardiology department in another building at the PMCH, which he later developed as the Indira Gandhi Institute of Cardiology[1].

Polypathy[edit]

Dr. Shreenivas is also the pioneer of the field of polypathy[3], a new system of medical care integrating both eastern and western therapies. Polypathy focuses on delivering personalised care to each patient.

To lend strength to this field, he established the International Institute of Polypathy and the International Association of Polypaths. He was the first president of the World Polypathy Congress. The first session of the Congress was held in 1997 in Delhi. Further sessions were held in Kathmandu in 1998, in Begni di Lucca in 1999, in Milan in 2000, in Albagnano in 2002 and again in Kathmandu in later years.

Literature[edit]

Dr. Shreenivas had also invented certain new styles in Hindi literature -- Pagadya, Thaat Neel-Pitambari and Kinchit Kathaayein. He had penned a total of ten books in his lifetime.

Spirituality[edit]

Along with having a modern, scientific outlook, Dr. Shreenivas also had a deep belief in a higher power. This led him to develop a novel approach to global ethics and spirituality which he termed as Spiritometry. He was invited to deliver a speech at the Second Conference of the Parliament of World's Religions in Chicago in 1993 -- a hundred years before that, in 1893, Swami Vivekanand had delivered his famous address at the First Conference of the Parliament of World's Religions in the same city.

Death[edit]

Dr. Shreenivas died on 11 November 2010 in Patna, India.
