Sisi Wei is an investigative journalist who develops and designs news applications at ProPublica.[1] She is also the co-founder of Code With Me, a workshop that teaches journalists how to code.[2] She is known for being a friendly advocate for new investigative journalists.
Education and Career[edit]
In 2011, Wei graduated from Northwestern University with a bachelor's degree in Journalism, with additional majors in legal studies and philosophy.[3] [4]
Prior to her position at ProPublica, Wei worked at the Washington Post as a graphics editor,[2] the Wall Street Journal, and the Associated Press. In addition to her work as a journalist, Wei has served as an adjunct professor at New York University, The New School, and CUNY.[1]
Her work at ProPublica ranges from investigating surgeon error rates to college affordability.[5][6] Her interactive stories use large data to serve public interest.[1] Recently, she has been researching and developing games for journalism, and has previously commented on the value that they have to the journalistic experience.[7][3][8][9]
Wei is involved with the Investigative Reporters and Editors and NICAR. She encourages new attendees to conferences to do things like submit lightning talks, and offers her own mentorship.[10]

Awards[edit]
In 2016, Wei won the Global Editors Network Data Journalism Award for Best Individual Portfolio.[11] She has also won multiple Malofiej,[12] SND Digital,[13] and ONA awards, as well as the Gannett Award for Innovation in Watchdog Journalism.[1] She was a finalist for the Livingston Award for her work on Tracking Evictions and Rent Stabilization in NYC.[14] [15]
