Snaptrip was founded in 2014 and is the biggest online marketplace for last-minute discounted UK holiday cottages hosting over 60,000 properties. The business has helped 100,000 people find a last minute rental and saved them a combined total of almost £1 million in accommodation costs since 2014.[1].

Snaptrip is an aggregation platform and is used by holiday cottage agencies to sell their distressed inventory via members-only discounts on last-minute deals. The website allows its users to filter searches according to the services and requirements they need including: group travel, pet friendly and family accommodation.

Snaptrip has received investment from such investors as VC firms Forward Partners [2] and Bestport Ventures.[3].

Snaptrip has attracted attention for being an employer that encourages its employees to keep a healthy work / life balance; this includes it being company policy not to check emails outside of office hours[4].

History[edit]

Origins[edit]

The company launched in May 2014 after a seed-funding round of investment driven by Forward Partners on the basis of a business proposal from CEO and co-founder Matt Fox[5]. Matt was the previous Head of Marketing and Operations at pureholidayhomes prior to the sale of the company of the @Leisure-Group in 2011 for an undisclosed sum[6]. Forward Partners introduced him to technical officer CTO Dan Harrison, who had spent eight years at sector giant HomeAway as the Manager of the UK Software Engineering Team. Together, they had fifteen years in the sector and within six months of launching the company, had secured 12,450 unique cottages properties on its platform from partnerships with major UK agencies.

Expansion[edit]

In January 2015, nine months post-launch, Snaptrip closed another round of investment with $2.2m (£1.5m) in funding, making a fundraising total of $3.25m (£2.2m) for the company so far[7]. The investment round was led by London-based VC firm Bestport Ventures. Also taking part was the London Co-Investment Fund, via its partnership with existing Snaptrip investor Cragie Capital. Notable Angel investors include Robin Skidmore who co-founded marketing agency Epiphany, sold for £18M[8], Robin Batchelor, a former MD at BlackRock; Harry Hyman (MD of Primary Health Properties Plc) and Sir David Arculus (formerly chairman of O2). New investors joined the list of existing Snaptrip backers including Forward Partners, Charlotte St Capital, JustGiving and Forward Partners Chairman Jonathan McKay and James Davis, ex-CFO of uSwitch.

At the start of 2018, Snaptrip secured another £2.1m of funding through another investment round led once more by Bestport Ventures and also included Snaptrip’s other institutional shareholder Forward Partners. Several current and new Angel investors participated in the round, including Matthew Witt, former Chief Operating Officer of Active Hotels (acquired by Booking.com). Snaptrip went on to acquire Last Minute Cottages for an undisclosed sum[9]. The deal also included websites for big-cottages.com and henpartyvenues.co.uk, owned by Last Minute Cottages, and continued to run under the same trading names respectively. This was the first time that Snaptrip started working with individual homeowners.
