Society for NeuroOncology

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Society for Neuro-Oncology (SNO) is a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to advancing multi-disciplinary brain tumor research, education, and collaboration to drive discovery and improve patient care. SNO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with membership open to clinicians, basic scientists, nurses and other health care professionals whose focus is central nervous system tumors in children, adolescents and adults.

About SNO[edit]

History

Established in 1994 by Dr. Victor Levin of the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, SNO was created to address the lack of coordinated care for patients with neurological malignancies and to foster multidisciplinary interactions between the various sub-specialties in the field of neuro-oncology.

First elected officers of SNO were Victor Levin, MD as President, Michael Prados, MD as Vice President and Stuart Grossman, MD as Secretary-Treasurer.

On January 31, 1996, SNO was incorporated as a 501(c)(3).

Publications[edit]

Neuro-Oncology

Neuro-Oncology is the official journal of the Society for Neuro-Oncology and is affiliated with the Japan Society of Neuro-Oncology and the European Association of Neuro-Oncology.[1] The journal contains information in all areas of neuro-oncology with peer-reviewed articles and reviews, essays and meetings on selected topics and published meeting abstracts. The first issue was published in 1999, with support from the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Kenneth Aldape, MD, is the current Editor-in-Chief of Neuro-Oncology.

Neuro-Oncology Practice

Neuro-Oncology Practice was launched by the Society for Neuro-Oncology and OUP as a complement to SNO’s principal journal, Neuro-Oncology, in 2014, with the financial support of the National Brain Tumor Society and the SNO Foundation. The Editor-in-Chief of Neuro-Oncology Practice is Susan Chang, and the co-editors are Jeffrey Wefel (SNO), Wolfgang Grisold (EANO) and Rakesh Jalaki (ASNO).

Both Neuro-Oncology and Neuro-Oncology Practice journals are published by Oxford University Press (OUP).

Events[edit]

SNO Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting and Education Day of the Society for Neuro-Oncology is an annual conference on the subject of malignancies of the Central Nervous System. The SNO meeting serves as a connection for scientific research and clinical advancement in the field of neuro-oncology. The first meeting was held in 1996 in Santa Fe, NM and has been held every year since. The meeting features an education day, invited keynote lectures, oral abstract presentations and electronic and traditional poster presentations.

Biennial Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Basic and Translational Research Conference

First held in 2011, the SNO Biennial Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Basic and Translational Research Conference features invited keynote lectures, oral abstract presentations and traditional poster presentations from basic, translational and clinical researchers with an interest in central nervous systems tumors in children and adolescents.

Membership[edit]

Members of the Society for Neuro-Oncology are comprised of researchers and/or clinicians who are involved with the treatment of patients with CNS malignancies. Members have access to SNO journals, Neuro-Oncology and Neuro-Oncology Practice, and they receive regular announcements about upcoming events and news in the field of neuro-oncology. SNO’s members represent more than 50 countries and form an interface between the fields of neurological diseases and cancer.

Members of SNO, along with the Asian Society of Neuro-Oncology (ASNO) and the European Association of Neuro-Oncology make up the World Federation of Neuro-Oncology Societies (WFNOS).

Online Education Center[edit]

The Society’s online education center provides audio recordings from a broad range of neuro-oncology topics. The topics were captured from SNO’s Annual Meeting and feature categories such as clinical trials, basic science, immunology/immunotherapy, brain metastasis, pediatrics, low grade gliomas and elderly care in glioblastoma.
