Somali Week Minnesota

Somali Week (locally refered to as Somali Week Minnesota) is an annual week-long culture, music and arts festival that runs in the months of June and July in commemoration of Somali Independence day. It was founded in 2012 by Kajoog a non-profit organization who have since then remain the organizers. This week long activity consist of the Somali Independence Day Festival, Xasuuso (Remember) 1960 and a host of other events and activities aimed at promoting the somali youth and culture.

The main event, Somali Independence day festival is held in the City of Minneapolis on Lake Street between Blaisdell and Stevens Avenue. This event features musical performances, cultural and art displays from Somalis as well as presentations and speeches from different organizations and government officials. Across the festival grounds are several tents showcasing sponsors and vendors. Over the years, this event has grown from one block with 5,000 – 8,000 participants, to three blocks with a diverse crowd of over 40,000 participants. The theme of Somali Week 2018 was Promoting Diversity through Unity and Inclusion.
