Artist Sopho Chkhikvadze[edit]

Sopho Chkhikvadze (born 1972) lives and works in London, UK. Sopho Chkhikvadze was born in Tbilisi, Georgia. She studied fine art at J. Nikoladze Tbilisi State Art School and later accomplished Masters degree in fine art at Tbilisi State Academy of Art, Tbilisi, Georgia in 1997. Chkhikvadze's practice shares stylistic approach with the early modernist painters and can be characterized as a contemporary 'faux naïf'. Her works give a false impression of childlike simplicity, while being complex in technique as well as meaning. Her compositions are serene, subtle and somehow mystic too. Her blurry imagery never gives the sense of exact time and place, in fact, her mystic images resemble fragments from a story, focused on a detail out of context. The blurry oil strokes create ambience and are ambiguous in their character. Chkhikvadze's works are held in the Moscow Modern Art Museum, Muzeum Montanelli and private collections across Europe.

National Portrait Gallery - BP Portrait award 2017[edit]

The portrait is of the journalist, David Wigg, who Chkhikvadze first met in a London café when his appearance intrigued the artist. She asked him to sit for a portrait, and it was not until later in the conversation that she discovered his profession.

Philip Hensher : The most rewarding portraits are those that go beyond a face, and somehow capture a personality. Sopio Chkhikvadze’s portrait of the journalist David Wigg might not be the most conventionally skilled piece of painting here. But she has the sense to place him in an interior, and it perfectly renders his unmistakable appearance, regal, daffy and very slightly frayed round the edges.[1]

Portrait of Martin Chaffer The portrait is of the photographer, Martin Chaffer, whom the artist’s son asked to sit for a portrait after meeting him at an exhibition. Chaffer has a particular interest in paintings and agreed to several sittings with the artist. Chkhikvadze decided to paint Chaffer with a map of London to provide an interesting visual context [1]
