About[edit]

Speakeasy HQ Vaudeville Theatre is the only dedicated vaudeville theatre in the Southern Hemisphere and "Melbourne's only vaudeville theatre and wine bar with cabaret, boylesque, circus, burlesque, sideshow, jazz, stand-up".[1].Situated in Melbourne, Australia it is owned by circus impresario Roy Maloy and business entrepreneur Knuckles.

History[edit]

In 2013 Australian Circus veteran Maloy, in conjunction with Melbourne businesswoman and entrepreneur Knuckles, set about establishing the first dedicated vaudeville theatre in Australia to operate since the closure of the Tivoli Theatre in 1967[2]

The first performance were given in November 2013 and sponsored in part by Father Bob Maguire, who allowed the performances to be carried out in his Parish Church side-Hall. After sell out shows the pop-up style events were presented in 2014 in a dance hall at 192 Canterbury Rd, Canterbury, the theatre moved temporarily to the Brunswick St Art Gallery (322 Brunswick St, Brunswick).

By the middle of 2015 plans were underway to rent a third floor studio room at 377 Little Bourke St, which was renovated by Maloy and Knuckles into a dedicated vaudeville theatre. However, owing to disagreements with the landlord and capacity numbers being arched by as early as two weeks prior to performances, the theatre again relocated only a year after it was opened. They announced the newly established theatre location in early 2016 at 522 Flinders St, Melbourne.[3]

Speakeasy HQ Vaudeville Theatre[edit]

The building now occupied by Speakeasy HQ was built to accommodate the wealth from the Ballarat Goldrush and was the head office of the State Savings Bank 1858 to 1912.[4]

The Speakeasy HQ Vaudeville Theatre seats approximately 100 people, and presents performances on a stage that is a replica of the original vaudeville theatres of the 1890's that were prolific in Melbourne and Sydney. The building shares its tenancy with The Vault Theatre; a second theatre separated by entrance via Mercantile Place. Once serving as an original bank vault and hard rooms of the State Savings Bank, The Vault Theatre is a 24 seat, luxuriously appointed burlesque and jazz theatre. It's bar is located in the walk-in bank vault.

Bordello Theatre[edit]

In January 2018 The Bordello Theatre was launched in the top floor attic space of the Top of the Town Brothel in Melbourne. Named the Bordello Theatre for it's unique location situation on the top floor of an operational brothel, the unique venue played host to present queer cabaret and experimental plays[5]. After several sold out performances by leading queer artists and play writes, the Bordello Theatre was consumed by fire on Saturday 17 March in the early morning.[6]
