Spintronix Color Guard

History[edit]

Spintronix Color Guard was created as a color guard education company by Jackie Krasuski in 2008.[1] They held their inaugural weekend camp in 2009 at their home base in Mountain View, Missouri, instructed by Krasuski and Samantha Stepp (alumni of Memphis Sound Drum and Bugle Corps).[2] After a couple of years of camps, they started the Indoor Color Guard as the flagship competitive unit of the organization to compete in the Mid-Continent Color Guard Association (MCCGA).[3] Their passion for color guard education lead them to the acquisition of Guardians of Spin Color Guard Camp based in Kansas City, MO. After folding their Kansas City operations, Spintronix focused more heavily on developing the newly-created Spintronix Indoor Guard, who eventually became state champions in 2017[4][5] and again in 2018.[6]

[edit]

The company logo, designed by creator Jackie Krasuski, consists of a silhouetted performer in pointe arabesque with her flag held in a back present overhead. It is crossed by a PQRST wave as seen on an electrocardiogram. This represents a multitude of ideas, chief among those being the infusion of science and art, and a heartbeat of passion for performing.

The logo is a dark teal color and accented with either black or white. The official logo font is called "Rage Italic".

Incorporation[edit]

The company name was first registered as "Spintronics Color Guard" in 2008, and changed the spelling to "Spintronix" in 2009 after a camp attendee spelled it that way in her thank-you note.

Spintronix incorporated as a non-profit organization under the IRS 501(c)(3) in the fall of 2012.[8]

Indoor Color Guard[edit]

The Indoor Color Guard is the flagship competition team of Spintronix, competing in the Missouri-based Mid-Continent Color Guard circuit.[9] The team meets every weekend to train and rehearse for 24 hours at their rented facility. Competitions are attended on Saturdays, and occasionally the team has traveled out of the state to participate in other competitions. Members can range in age from 12-22 years old, as recorded on the day of championships competition each year.[10]

Initiation[edit]

All members of Spintronix participate in an initiation ceremony once per season, that explains the traditions and history of the team and bonds them together as a family. The actual proceedings of the initiation ceremony are kept secret (although no one has ever been harmed or pressured to do anything against their will during the event!). After initiation, members are presented with their membership necklace, which then becomes a part of their uniform and is added to each season that the performer is a member.

Membership Necklace[edit]

The membership necklace of a performing member consists of a white bead on the wearer's left side, signifying the rookie year of the performer, a whale tail charm to represent the team's mascot, and then teal beads to the wearer's right indicating the number of seasons that the performer was a member of SIG. On the far right, a black bead is added to represent the performer's final season (the age-out season) generally completed at 22 years of age.

Member Jacket[edit]

Spintronix Indoor Guard members have the option to purchase their member jacket at the beginning of each season. They are black, water-resistant, athletic jackets with the Spintronix logo embroidered over the left breast and the member's name embroidered on the right. The back has the Spintronix logo screen-printed in the center.[12]

Members have the option to add patches to their jackets and they are properly placed in the following way:

  • Left sleeve: American flag on top, contest an circuit patches follow
  • Right sleeve: Spintronix patch on top, show patches follow
  • Left breast: Planet Earth patch beneath logo
  • Right breast: Title patch(es) beneath name
  • Back: all other patches, honor ensembles, locations, events, etc. around logo.

Mascot[edit]

The Spintronix Indoor Guard mascot is a killer whale aptly named "Shamu" after Sea World's famous performing orca whale.

Camps[edit]

Color Guard camps were the initial purpose for the creation of Spintronix, and they continue each year to further educate youth in the color guard activity.

Camps in Mountain View, MO from 2009-2017 were held at the Mountain View Family Youth Center. Guardians of Spin camps were held in various locations that changed from year to year. Camps in Fayette were held at Central Methodist University.[13]

Single-Day Clinics[edit]

Beginning in 2018, Spintronix hosted a number of public single-day clinics with various regular staff members, Spinterns, and students across the country. These clinics varied in the number of students in attendance, and the music used to teach choreography was chosen from the library held under Spintronix's ASCAP music license for education.

Clinics have been held in the following US cities:

  • Mountain View, MO
  • Sullivan, MO
  • Olathe, KS
  • Limon, CO
  • St. Cloud, FL
  • Kansas City, MO
  • Kalamazoo, MI

And internationally in São Paulo, BR.

Private Clinics[edit]

In addition to its camps and public single-day clinics, Spintronix has also hosted a multitude of private clinics for schools and organizations. These clinics have varying purposes including performer training, choreography instruction, staff instruction, and more.

Spinternship Program[edit]

Founded in 2010, the Spintronix Internship program (later coined "Spinternship" by Theodore Brown) gave former high school color guard performers the opportunity to learn about instructing color guard. This provided a stepping stone from performer to instructor, as spinterns were required to help their supervising instructor, along with assisting with other camp requirements that instructors may encounter. These include, but are not limited to, check-in and check-out, one-on-one instruction, whole group instruction, first aid, setup and tear down, scheduling, problem solving, and conflict resolution.

In return, Spinterns are added to a database where they may be contacted about color guard instructional opportunities in their area. They are also granted recommendation letters upon request, and have contact with other Spintronix instructors for networking and guidance.[17]

Instructional Videos[edit]

Spintronix founded their YouTube channel in 2010 with the intention of posting videos of their various camp performances, and later Indoor Color Guard performances. However, in 2014 Jackie Krasuski and Erica Hipp (a fellow Memphis Sound alumni) began creating instructional videos and posting them to the channel labeled #Howtocolorguard.[18] This caused the channel to jump in number of subscribers and gave Spintronix a much larger audience worldwide.

Videos are found on the Spintronix YouTube channel in the following categories:

  • Flag Level 1, 2, and 3
  • Rifle Level 1, 2, and 3
  • Sabre Level 1, 2, and 3
  • Dance Level 1, 2, and 3
  • Makeup Mondays
  • General How to color guard[19]
  • SIG Vlogs

In 2016, fellow SIG instructor Anna Carter had the idea to create video blogs (vlogs) of the team each week.[20] This would aide in recording of the team's history and help the audience to see behind the scenes at Spintronix, so they could better understand how the company worked.

In 2015, SIG member and Spintern Caitlin Meyer started a segment called "Makeup Mondays" in which she demonstrated to fans different methods and types of performance makeup to use. In 2017 this segment was taken over by SIG member and Spintern Samantha Wallace. It has also featured Corey Rogers as a guest host.
