Splash and Burn

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Splash and Burn is an Artist led Artivism campaign raising awareness of the unsustainable farming practices of Palm Oil in South East Asia; focusing the adverse affects on the community, wildlife population and forests.[1] The project is curated by lithuanian Artist Ernest Zacharevic and coordinated by Charlotte Pyatt along with the local support and knowledge of The Sumatran Orangutan Society and the Orangutan Information Centre.[2]

“A state of global environmental crisis is defining our generation,” Zacharevic tells Colossal. “As consumers, we are so disconnected from the source of our commodities that we do not recognize the impact of our daily choices. This project is an effort to bridge that gap.”[3]

Participating artists have included Anders Gjennstad aka STRØK, Axel Void, Bibichun, Gabriel Pitcher, Isaac Cordal, Mark Jenkins and Pixel Pancho. Large Interventions have included the Land Art S.O.S from Ernest Zacharevic carved into 20 hectares of an abandoned Palm Oil plantation purchased by LUSH and donated to the OIC.[4] Their most recent campaign saw a collaboration with Portuguese Artist Vhils and gave rise to the plight of the Tapanuli Orangutan[5], a newly discovered species and already under direct threat from the development of a hydrodam inside of their habitat in the Batang Toru Ecosystem.[6]
