St. Justin Martyr School is a Co-ed Catholic Elementary and Intermediate school in Anaheim, California. Established in 1959 by Hugh O'Connor, it is named after Justin Martyr, an early Catholic Church founder and apologist. Construction began in November, 1958, on land that had previously been a chicken ranch and orange grove which was donated by the Stehly family[2]. Eight classrooms and the offices of the school were completed during the summer of 1959. On September 13, 1959, the school hosted its first Open House, and on September 14 to receive approximately 300 students in Grades 1, 2, and 3. The following year the Felician Sisters[3] were brought on as instructors. One grade was added each year until 1964 at which time the school included grades 1 through 8[4]. The first graduation class, in 1965, consisted of two classes containing a total of 85 students. A kindergarten class was added in 1983 and a transitional kindergarten in 2014.
The Felician Sisters maintained supervision of the school until June 1993 when it was no longer possible for the Felician Community to provide teachers. Since then, the administrative and teaching staff have is composed of all-lay personelle.
In 1986, an Extended School Day Care facility was added. During the years 1986 to 1988, science and computer labs, and an art room were established in vacant classrooms.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange, formed in 1976 at which time St. Justin Martyr School became a part of this new Diocese and was no longer part of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles[5]. The Schools Athletic teams are part of the Parochial Athletic League, which includes other Roman Catholic Schools in he surrounding area. School administration is overseen directly by the Diocese of Orange catholic schools department, but remains in connection with St. Justin Martyr Church. This also includes membership to the Marian Alliance of Roman Catholic Schools, which includes St. Justin Martyr School, St. Polycarp, St. Joseph, and School of our Lady.
A P.T.O. Board was established in 1981 and a School Board in 1988. The P.T.O. is primarily the fundraising arm of the school and the School Board (whose name was changed to Consultative Board) is an advisory board to the administration. These orgaizations, in conjunction with the Orange Catholic Foundation[6], cooperate to maintain the school's enrollment and financial viability.
