Steven Douglas Grove (born October 16, 1978) in Northfield, Minnesota, is an American businessman, who is the current commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) serving since January 2019. Along with being the known founder of Google News Lab in 2012 and being employed with Google for 12 years and formerly led YouTube's News and Politics team.
Education[edit]
Grove graduated from Northfield High School in 1996. Grove eventually attended Harvard Kennedy School better known as John F. Kennedy School of Government to obtain a master's in public policy. He then went on to attend Claremont McKenna College earning a B.A. in philosophy, politics, and economics.
Career[edit]
Grove began his career after college and worked as an English teacher in 1999. He is an International Security Fellow at the New America Foundation.
In 2007 he began working with google and became an executive of google. He eventually founded Google News Lab and worked for YouTube.
He has served as an advisor to the White House and MN State Department on counter-terrorism strategy. Later on serving on the advisory boards of Witness, which is a video human rights nonprofit and nationwide service organization to improve local news.
During his career with Google and YouTube, he co-founded a nonprofit organization better known as Silicon North Stars alongside his wife Mary in 2013. The organization is meant to help youth from underserved communities in Minnesota pursue multi careers in the technology business field. He also wrote for The Boston Globe and ABC News.
On January 4, 2019, Grove who previously was The Google News Lab Director, was chosen to be the new commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development by Governor-elect Tim Walz and Lt Governor Peggy Flanagan 3 days prior to them being sworn into their new positions.
Personal Life[edit]
Grove was born in Northfield Minnesota on October 16, 1978. He was raised in Northfield and lived there for well over into his young adult life before moving to California. He then married Mary Himinkool on September 1, 2012 in which he met her while working with Google in California. They both have a twin son and daughter who were born December 9, 2016. In late 2018, the couple and their kids moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota.
