Stephen Torr, (born 24 March 1959, Peterborough, England) is a British entomologist. He is a chair in Neglected Tropical Diseases at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine,.[1], and has over 30 years experience working on the behaviour, ecology and control of vectors of tropical disease, notably tsetse flies and mosquitoes. Torr is best known for his work on developing novel control methods for tsetse flies, with his research being noted the "eighth most important scientific discovery of the last 60 years" by a poll of UK academics in 2010 [2][3], announced by Nobel Prize winner Harry Kroto [4]

Education and career[edit]

Torr attended Royal Holloway, University of London, where he studied Zoology (B.Sc. 1980). He enrolled at Imperial College London in the same year and gained a master's degree in Applied Entology (M.Sc., 1981). Subsequently, Torr studied insect behaviour at the University of London, where he obtained his doctorate by thesis "The host-orientated behaviour of tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae)" (Ph.D, 1987)[5]
