The Stockholm School of Entrepreneurship (SSES) is a school providing interdisciplinary entrepreneurship education for students and alumni of 5 of Stockholm’s universities: the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE), Karolinska Institutet (KI), the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design (Konstfack), and Stockholm University (SU).

SSES activities are divided into three main areas: academic education, skills training, startup pre-incubation and business acceleration.

The SSES provides courses of ECTS accredited academic courses at the MSc and PhD level, offering approximately 20 courses annually, examining around 800 students. The academic portfolio includes all steps in the entrepreneurial process from ideation and business model innovation to social entrepreneurship, negotiations and design thinking.

History[edit]

SSES was founded in 1999, through the generous support of the Erling Persson Family Foundation[1]. Since its inception, more than 15.000 students have participated in the programs offered by SSES.

Throughout its history SSES has offered numerous events in Stockholm, such as Start-up Day[2] and Good Morning[3], gathering entrepreneurs and researchers to discuss ideas of medicine, technology, economics, design, and the humanities.

SSES consists of a core administrative team, faculty members and professors as well as a large global network of experts and advisors from a wide array of academic disciplines. Academics[edit]

The SSES portfolio consists of ECTS accredited academic courses at the MSc and PhD level, offering approximately 20 courses annually, examining around 800 students. Throughout its history, SSES has offered approximately 200 academic course offerings and 37 unique courses. The current academic portfolio includes all steps in the entrepreneurial process from ideation and business model innovation to social entrepreneurship, negotiations and Design Thinking.                                                                                                           

Incubation and Acceleration[edit]

SSES offers students and alumni of the member universities the ability to validate, incubate and accelerate their early-stage ideas housing approximately 150 entrepreneurs annually.

Fellowship

Founded in 2015, the SSES pre-incubator, the Fellowship, houses students to develop their ideas together with a team of advisors and a personal mentor for a 12-week program. SSES incubates approximately 120 individuals per year.

Affinity

Founded in 2017, The Affinity Program is a startup accelerator. SSES accelerates approximately 10 companies per year.

Additionally, SSES launched two other incubators, SSE Business Lab[5], founded in 2001 for the Stockholm School of Economics and Transit[6], founded in 2004, for Konstfack in order to support startups within the creative and cultural industries.

Achievements[edit]

Since 1999, SSES has offered a total of 270 academic courses and 300 extracurricular activities with over 15.000 student graduations. Approximately 40% of SSES graduates found companies and around 1.500 companies worldwide are operated by alumni.[7]

In 2013, SSES was the first European organization to be recognised for its “Exceptional Achievements in Entrepreneurship Education Across Disciplines” by the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers. 

At the GCEC 2018 conference in Chicago SSES was recognised with an award for “Outstanding Contributions to Venture Creation”.[8]

Extra-curricular activities[edit]

SSES offers a number of extracurricular activities: workshops, breakfast talks and bootcamps, approximately 35 activities annually for around 700 participants on topics such as insight mapping, designing your life, conscious communication, the future of life and smart cities.


International Collaborations                                                                                                      [edit]

In total, SSES has offered more than 25 international bootcamps. The bootcamps usually consists of collaborations including a 2014 Bootcamp on The Future of Mobility in Gridlocked Cities, done in collaboration with Parsons School of Design and Ford in New York City, a 2011 Bootcamp on The Future of Death, done in collaboration with National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad in India, and a 2016 Bootcamp on Social Innovation, done in collaboration with the Iceland Academy of the Arts in Iceland.
