Structura Gallery

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Structura gallery is a contemporary art space in Sofia, Bulgaria which first opened doors on 19th of December 2017. Exhibitions, art projects and other events connected with the visual arts take place in the gallery which is placed in the heart of the capital of Bulgaria. Founder and director of the gallery is PhD art critic Maria Vassileva. For the short time on the cultural scene, the gallery has already presented significant Bulgarian and foreign artists.

Forms of Coexistence[edit]

The beginning was set by a collective international exhibition "Forms of coexistence"[1]. The works reflect our experience of living harmoniously in the dynamic world of globalization. Social and political aspects such as migration and terrorism are concerned, as well as a more intimate view of self-perception. The presented artists were Bistra Lechevalier, Bora Petkova, Boris Delchev, Valentin Stefanoff, Vikenti Komitski, Gaini Nursapina, Igor Eskinja, Kalin Serapionov, Krassimir Terziev, Mariana Vassileva, Marcel Odenbach, Mihail Novakov, Nadezhda Oleg Lyahova, Nina Kovacheva, Olivia Mihaltianu, Svetlana Mircheva, Sevda Chkoutova, Stanimir Genov, Stefka Georgieva, HR-Stamenov and Boryana Rossa.

Deviations[edit]

The next exhibition, called “Deviations”[2], was created specifically for the Structura Gallery space. It was by Adriana Chernin – a Bulgarian artist who lives and works mostly in Vienna. In 2014, Format magazine put her name in top 100 contemporary artists on the Austrian art scene, and MAK invites her to work with elements of ornamentation from a mosque in Cairo. Then the ornament becomes a source of inspiration for her - as a metaphor for cultural, social and personal interweave and storytelling.

Wild Zone[edit]

After the premiere of their latest video installation "Wild Zone"[3] at the Museum in Arnhem, the Netherlands, artistic duo L.A. Raeven presented their project at Structura Gallery. They focus their energy on stereotypes built on the laws of consumer society and on the way they affect our own self-esteem. Whether we can be individual and unique in today's world, full of clichés and ready-made ideas imposed by the big industries. The Wild Zone title comes from a French philosopher who uses this term to describe precisely those groups of people who do not fit into society.

Gravity[edit]

In a series of minimalist canvases and sculptures, artist Simeon Simeonov presented his exhibition "Gravity"[4]. Albert Einstein describes gravity not as a force, but as a consequence of the distortion of space-time. Simeon Simeonov examines the space in continuous movement and includes time as a basic dimension in his sculptures. He expresses all this through roughness, scars, pouring forms and plastic materials.

Life is a Symphony[edit]

Alla Georgieva's exhibition "Life is a Symphony"[5] is inspired by her personal story. A sincere confession - about the disease as "a sudden stop on the road", about survival and the joy of life afterwards. The open talk about such a taboo topic in our society may be the key for making the exhibition one of the most successful in 2018.

Subversive Play (upcoming)[edit]

For the beginning of the new season in September, an international exhibition "Subversive Play" will be opened. Artists Songul Boyraz, Daniela Kostova, Luana Perilli, Chloe Irla, David Page, Rachel Peachey and Paul Mosig are going to take part in it. They will explore the game as a critical tool for reflection on the day-to-day activities of children in refugee camps or on people recovering wrecked public places. We usually associate the game with freedom and creative expression, but it often includes social norms deeply embedded in institutional structures. By creating and presenting different game environments, the contemporary artists in the exhibition will try to show the lack of transparency of these norms that determine the behavior and movement of bodies in public spaces.

Apart from exhibitions, the gallery is a place for lectures, public discussions, presentations, plays, film projections, installations, performances, etc.[6]
