A substance use disorder is a form of mental disorder that takes a toll on an individual’s cognitive, and physical behavior that ultimately leads to a lack of control of the use of the substance whether it may be legal, or illegal , alcohol, and prescribed/unprescribed medications. To continue, an addictive disorder that includes the overuse of alcohol and drugs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 65.8 million U.S. adults reported past month binge drinking, and 35.8 million reported illicit drug use or prescription pain reliever misuse during the mont of May 2022. To continue, about 20.4 million met diagnostic criteria for a substance use disorder during the past year.
Researchers have said that there are a few different causes that can explain why addictions are able to develop in individuals. One biological reason is transgenerational epigenetic inheritance, which is where environmental influences on the genes of a parent can also trickle down to their children and affect the associated traits, and behavioral phenotypes. In a psychodynamic approach, it explains that addiction is linked to unconscious factors from the past that could be associated to a trauma response go negative coping by substances. Moreover, in a cognitive approach expectancy theory, a theory that suggests that people will perform with effort, expecting a reward. So, individuals will use substances expecting the satisfying euphoria state that it brings to the body. It’s important to also observe Bronfenbrenner’s ecological system. Bronfenbrenner’s believes that humans interact with the microsystem which includes friends, family, and educators. The mesosystem is the interactions with those of the microsystem, the ecosystem illustrates the links between social settings, and the macroostsyem is the culture in which an individual lives. So this can obviously apply with the topic of substance abuse and addiction. If an individual is encouraged to try harmful substances, either socially by a friend or watching a parent use it as a coping mechanism it and lead to them constantly using it over time and then leading to an addiction.
