Suggested Friends (Band)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Suggested Friends is a British indie-rock band based in London, consisting of Faith Taylor, Christabel Williams, Jack McGinn, and Emma Kupa. After forming in November 2015, the band began playing regularly on London's DIY scene, and released their first single Chicken on Odd Box Records in February 2017.[1]. Their self-titled debut studio album was released in November 2017 on Odd Box Records[2]

History[edit]

In June 2016, Suggested Friends released their first self-recorded song I Can't Roll My Eyes That Far (Back)[3] with an accompanying home-made video, while playing extensively in London. In August 2016 the band embarked on their first UK tour with fellow DIY group Charmpit. In February 2017, they released their first 7' single Chicken on Odd Box Records, having recorded with Mark Jasper at Sound Savers studio in London[4]. In the same month they also toured the UK again with Mark's post-punk band Witching Waves. In November 2017 their debut studio album was released on Odd Box Records[2], which saw the band undertake a third UK tour with indie-pop band Wolf Girl. In July 2018, the album was nominated for Loud Women's HERCURY prize[5] In August 2018, Suggested Friends played at Athens Popfest in Georgia and toured the surrounding states. Suggested Friends have played an array of festivals, including Indietracks, A Carefully Planned Festival, DIY Popfest, Athens Popfest, and End Of The Road, which they were selected to play from over 2000 applicants to the 'Play End Of The Road' competition[6]

Critical Reception[edit]

Suggested Friends have been highly praised for both their live sets and releases, with comparisons to mid-90s American guitar rock such as Blake Babies, the twee pop of Go Sailor, and the jangle pop of The Cranberries. The band's influences span the 70s soft rock sounds of Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles to the contemporary indie rock of Swearin' and the country rock of Hiss Golden Messenger. Everett True described Suggested Friends as 'frighteningly good in a way that most stuff called frighteningly good just isn’t'[7]. Gold Flake Paint described their first single Chicken as 'brilliantly distinct, wrapping their varying influences in to one rabid burst of lofi indie-rock'[1] Of the album's lead single, I Don't Want To Be A Horcrux For Your Soul, The Grey Estates noted that 'Faith Taylor's vivid, cliche-free lyrics are the kind you find lodged in your head for days at a time'[8]
