Sun Mingjing

Sun Mingjing (October 31, 1911 - November 16, 1992) was a Chinese educator, pioneer in cinema and Television education in China. Born in Nanjing, Jiangsu, His father is Sun Shengxi, and his mother Sun Suici. He has two children, Sun Jianqiu and Sun Jianhe.

Biography

Sun Mingjing studied Physics at Jinling College in 1927 and later Chemistry, Physics, and Electronic Engineering at Jinling College and the Central University (present Nanjing University), besides minoring in National Literature, Drama, Music, and Foreign Languages. In 1936, Sun Mingjing started the "Major in Cinema and Broadcasting", marking the beginning of cinema and broadcasting teaching in Chinese higher education.

Starting from 1937, he shot series of cinema, including Image of China, independent documentaries, and educational films. Sun visited the University of Minnesota's Visual Education Program for three months in 1941. He was impressed by the management of the visual materials at the program and the way it tried to serve the University of Minnesota as whole. He wrote and published a detailed report on his experience together with his suggestions for developing similar programs in Chinese universities.

He co-founded Beijing Film Academy in 1952. He was labeled a rightist during Cultural Revolution and was only re-hired by Beijing Film Academy in the 1970s. He taught many students at the Academy, including Zhang Yimou. He died in 1992 in Beijing.
