Super Dungeon Master VX: Quest for the Firestaff[edit]

"Super Dungeon Master VX: Quest for the Firestaff"[1][2] is a 2017 freeware game, by Dave Gumble.[3] It is a remake of Dungeon Master, using a software engine called RPG Maker VX Ace.

Gameplay[edit]

Much like the original, the player can create a party of 4 champions, many of which are similar to the champions from both Dungeon Master and Chaos Strikes Back.

The game is played in a top-down view, similar to many JRPG games of the 1990s. Combat features heavily in this game and is turn-based.

As per Dungeon Master, Theron is summoned to rally a party of heroes from the Hall of Champions and defeat Lord Chaos using the reassembled Firestaff.

Champions can earn experience as they progress, through both exploring and combat. The many character classes are based upon the four core classes of Fighter, Ninja, Priest and Wizard.

The game uses a checkpoint-based save-game mechanic.

Contributors[edit]

The game is a community-driven project, with contributions from many independent developers and artists.

Jeroen Tel endorsed the use of the Maniacs of Noise song "Firing Up" as the title track to this game.[4]

Hazel Hawkins has provided the artwork.[5]

Reception[edit]

The game has gotten mixed reviews, but generally supported.

"A free remake of an old classic, in RPG Maker!...It's really good to see new gamers being exposed to an old classic, and now to have options as to how they may try it."[6]

"Dedication in Abundance, quality in short supply. The dev put a lot of work into making these assets, normally RPG Maker games are anime style affairs, this game does look true to the 8bit style of the era, sadly everything from map design to mechanics are awful, very much standard or sub standard RPG Maker content."[7]

"...it´s definitely fun! Especially since it doesn´t take itself too seriously..."[8]

"The worst rpg I've played."[9]
