Susana Borrás is Professor at the Department of Organization at Copenhagen Business School, Denmark. She holds a Masters Degree (UAB, Barcelona) and PhD Degree (EUI, Florence) in political science and sociology. She conducts research on the interaction between governance and innovation. More specifically, her research focuses on the following related topics: the governance of change in socio-technical systems, the scale-up and diffusion of innovation, the design of innovation policy and its instruments mix, the legitimacy of science and technology agencies, and the organizational capacity and processes related to social learning and policy learning. She has an extensive publication list on these themes, both in acclaimed international peer reviewed scientific journals and in books. Susana Borrás is very active in academic and professional associations, particularly those which aim at consolidating the academic community while establishing a bridge with the world of policy-makers. She was active in founding two leading European scholarly associations in this field: EU-SPRI Forum (European Forum for Studies of Policies for Research and Innovation) and EPIP (European Policy for Intellectual Property). She was also the European editor of the international peer reviewed journal “Science and Public Policy” (October 2006 – June 2011). Her major accomplishment was to make the journal accepted into the Science Citation Index (Web of Science), and to enhance its visibility among policy makers (with subscribers in more than 70 countries). She is currently member of the editorial boards of six international peer reviewed journals, among which, “European Journal of Political Research”, “Science and Public Policy”, “European Journal of Risk Regulation”.

Policy advice and engagement with society

For more than two decades, Susana Borrás has advised governments and institutions at international and national levels on matters of science, technology and innovation policy. She is currently a member of the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (ATV) , Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Centre for European Studies, Sciences-Po Paris, France ; and member of the scientific committee of IBEI (Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals) From 2013 to 2016, was board member of the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. In 2010, she was member of the group of experts who conducted the mid-term evaluation of the EU’s FP7. The evaluation report served as a basis for the political discussions that lead to the new EU’s framework, the so-called “Horizon 2020”. In 2010-2014, was member of the Danish Research Policy Council, advising the Danish Minister and Parliament. The council was re-founded with the new name of Danish Research and Innovation Policy Council.
