Tanim Hayat Khan (17 January 1977) is a Bangladeshi musician, singer and music composer. He plays the fretless Indian musical instrument Sarod.

Tanim was born on 17 January 1977. He came from a musical background. His relatives include Ustad Dr. Alauddin Khan (his grand uncle), Ustad Ayet Ali Khan (his grandfather), Ustad Dr. Ali Akbar Khan (his uncle), Srimati Annapurna Devi (his aunty), Pandit Ravi Shankar (Annapurna's husband of first marriage), Ustad Abed Hossain Khan (his eldest uncle), Ustad Bahadur Khan (his second uncle), Sheikh Sadi Khan (his younger uncle), his other uncles Ustad Khadem Hossain Khan, Ustad Mir Kashem Khan, his cousin Ustad Phuljhuri Khan, Ustad Khurshid Khan, Ustad Shahadat Hossain Khan, Ustad Bidyut Khan, Ustad Kirit Khan, Reenat Fauzia (his sister), and many others. He was the second son and thid child of Musicologis Mobarak Hossain Khan and Fauzia Yasmin, popular artiste from 1960s. Tanim's great grandfather was Sabdar Hossain Khan (Sadu Khan), and other grand uncles include Samiruddin Khan, Fakir (Saint) Aftabuddin Khan, Ustad Nayeb Ali Khan. Tanim's aunties are famous singers of Bangladesh - Farida Yasmin, Nilufar Yasmin, Sabina Yasmin.

Musical Journey[edit]

Tanim started his musical journey at the age of 15 when started taking formal Tabla (Percussion) lesson from Pandit Modon Gopal Das of Bangladesh. Tanim Also took lessons on Acoustic and Bass Guitar from Music Director Sajal Das from whom he learnt chord progressions. At the age of 22, he started learning Sarode from his cousin brother Ustad Shahadat Hossain Khan, who is recognised internationally for his Sarode play. When Tanim was in Bangladesh he used to play Sarode for Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television. In 2003 Tanim moved to Australia to complete his MBA. After moving to Australia, Tanim became disciple of Dr Adrian McNeil who was the Head of Contemporary Music Department in Macquarie University at that time. Dr Adrian McNeil was the disciple of Pandit Ashok Roy, one of the disciples of Tanim’s Uncle Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. However, Tanim continued to take lessons from his guru Ustad Shahadat Hossain Khan (Until his unfortunate early demise) whenever he travelled back to Bangladesh and whenever Ustad Shahadat Hossain Khan travelled to Sydney for concerts.

Production[edit]

Tanim is also involved in production. He produced a fusion named ‘The Harmonic Minor’ and also have an official due with a Tagore Song under his belt where he reflected the Hindustani Raga side of that Tagore song. Currently Tanim is working with a fusion Band of Australia named ‘The Wiseman Circus’. Tanim is also working with online band ‘Beyond the Border’ where he performs Sarode and engaged in remaking numerous Bengali famous songs.

Tanim is also a music composer and tuned over 100 songs. His Aunty Sabina Yasmin [1], Doly Shaontoni, Shafiqua Nasrin Mimi, Ezaz Farah, Srijani, Pallabi Roy, Tajreen Gahar, Asma Debjani, Shafique Tuhin, Tarannum Afrin [2] and cousin Agoon are the famed artists and playback singers who sang songs in Tanim's tune.

Tanim's own tuned duet song 'Prem' with Shafiqua Nasrin Mimi (Shanti Niketan Scholar) has been highly appreciated by the audience and viewers. This song reached more than 150K viewers from TR Music Station. [3]

In December 2021 Tanim created history by producing a patriotic song of Bangladesh having 23 singers and performers in one song. Famous artists of Bangladesh such as Doly Shaontoni, Shafique Tuhin , Chhanda Chakrabarty and Shafiqua Nasrin Mimi and many other singers featured in that song. [4]

Achievements and Concerts[edit]

In April 2018, Tanim participated in the ‘Ecstatic Concert’ of 21st Commonwealth Games, Goldcoast, Australia, where he represented Bangladesh on Stage with his Sarode [5]. Tanim performed 9 duet concerts with his guru Ustad Shahadat Hossain Khan across Australia and USA.[6]

Personal life[edit]

Tanim is married to Tanzila Chowdhury. They have one son Aaryan Tahzeeb Khan and one daughter Rinaan Aarshi Khan.

Academic Background[edit]

Tanim completed his BBA with major in Management from University of Dhaka in 2000 and completed his MBA with major in Professional Accounting from UTS in 2005 and made Sydney as his second home. Professionally an accountant Tanim worked for Chartered Accounting firm before perused his career as an Academic. At present, Tanim works as a Teacher at TAFE Digital, NSW, Australia (Department of Education) as an Accounting and Finance faculty and also worked as Head of Accounting, TAFE Digital.
