The Banda School

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Banda School (also known as The Banda) is an independent co-educational school for boys and girls age 2 to 13 years. It was founded in 1966 by Mr J A L Chitty. The Banda is situated in the Nairobi suburb of Karen.[1] adjacent to Nairobi National Park. It offers the British Curriculum and prepares pupils for Independent Senior School Scholarship and the Common Entrance Examination (ISEB).

History[edit]

The Banda School traces its origins from Kaptagat, near Eldoret, where Mr. and Mrs. Chitty ran Kaptagat Preparatory School with 170 children from 1956. In 1966, the Dutch Government offered to purchase the school’s property and others around it to build a farmer’s training center. After searching for a suitable place to relocate the school, the Chittys settled on the current location, which was formerly occupied by the British Army in 1942 and later, The Banda Hotel.

The Banda Hotel was built of mud and wattle and roofed with makuti. In the Swahili, Indian and Malayan cultures, banda refers to a rough makuti roofed building.

Academics[edit]

The Banda School is among several schools in Kenya[2] that follow the National Curriculum of England and Wales (colloquially known as the British National Curriculum) and culminates in the Common Entrance Examination (ISEB).

The school is offers English as a Second Language (ESL).

The Banda attracts teachers from around the world. For instance, Simon O'Malley[3], the current headteacher of Thomas's Battersea, in London, where Prince George schools, taught for seven years at the Banda School in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Bill Sawyer[4], the current headteacher at Yarm Preparatory School, talks about his experience teaching at The Banda for six years. Mike Dickson[5], was headteacher at The Banda for 12 years (2001-2012) before proceeding to other schools in Africa and the UK.
