The Data Marketplace

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Overview

Our private information is becoming less private. Companies are selling information such as “person’s ethnicity, spending habits, sexual orientation, and specific illnesses such as HIV, diabetes, depression or substance abuse”.[1] with users having little to no knowledge of the fact. Companies including Acxiom and Experian, make a profit by selling the data collected from online, and your day to day life[2]. In a Newsweek article, it was said that, “We found a 50 percent accuracy rate in Acxiom data we looked at,” says Dixon, [“Pam Dixon, executive director of World Privacy Forum”] “and they are considered among the best.”[3]. The data being sold is often inaccurate, so the harmful repercussions aren’t necessarily due to anything users have done. "When we clicked on "NewYorkTimes.com," the software revealed the presence of more than a dozen third parties that the website had allowed in to observe our movements."[4]

Terms

Cookies- program where personal information is stored and recorded, for future visits to that site, and sometimes others
Data Brokers- are the ones selling the particulars about users
Data Broker Accountability and Transparency Act of 2015- requires that the information collected and sold is accurate, and "Requires data brokers to provide individuals with a reasonable means of expressing a preference to exclude their information from being used, shared, or sold for marketing purposes."[5]. In other words, users have the legal right to refuse personalized ads.

People/Groups

Experian- a third party that collects and sells data, and manages credit
Federal Communications Commission - Regulates communications via radio, TV, and satellite.[6]
Federal Trade Commission - A federal agency that protects consumers in order to ensure fair trade in the marketplace.[7]
