The project was firstly announced on early August 2020[3] and it is slated for an unknown release in 2021.

Premrise[edit]

The Exorcist follows a powerful Demonic possession of a 12-year-old girl and her mother's desperate attempts of rescuing her through an exorcism by two priests.

Production[edit]

Development[edit]

On early August 2020, it was officially announced that Morgan Creek Entertainment is making an official reboot of 1973's The Exorcist based on the novel of the same name from 1971 by William Peter Blatty[4], and, it would be a reboot of the film series it spawned later on due to its Academy Award wins and nominations.[5]

Ironically, /Film dug up an old tweet from 2015 by Morgan Creek Entertainment indicating the production company would never remake the beloved 1973 movie. Clearly, things have changed in the last five years.[6] In fact, according to Deadline Hollywood, which reported on the reboot, stated none of details are currently known.[7]

Petition[edit]

Due to the official annoucement of rebooting the film, numerous fans and audiences which said to be admiring and loving the 1973 original film by William Friedkin has launched an official petition project calling to cancel and cast out the planned reboot, with the petition reading[8];

The Exorcist is William Friedkin’s masterpiece. It’s a horror classic and one of the scariest movies ever made if not the scariest. The original movie was made in the seventies and is still relevant today. The Exorcist is one of the few movies that did not age, that remained for many of us the reference inspiring many other feature films and filmmakers. We, horror fans, moviegoers, cinephiles, movie buffs do not want or need a remake and this petition is to stop the greedy Hollywood machine for remaking The Exorcist as we all already know that a remake will never equal the original. Stop spending millions in remaking great movies and hire people who can create new original stories instead.

Release[edit]

Although the project was just announced, the reboot is set to be released in 2021.
