Production[edit]

Development[edit]

On July 28, 2017, Alan Menken expressed interest in working in a live-action adaptation of Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, arguing that "[it] would make an amazing live-action musical".[1] On January 16, 2019, it was reported that Walt Disney Pictures is developing a live-action remake of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, with David Henry Hwang set to write the film, while Josh Gad, David Hoberman, and Todd Lieberman are set to produce, with Gad being possibly considered to play the film's title character, Quasimodo.[2] The film will draw elements from both the animated film and Victor Hugo's novel.[3]

In May 2020, Don Hahn, who produced the animated film, revealed that he will also serve as a producer in the remake.[4] Hahn said that he wanted to approach the film in a way that can be appreciated by modern audiences, and that he wants the film to serve as a unique experince from the original film, similar to the stage adaptation.[4]

Music[edit]

Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, who previously wrote the original film's songs, will write new songs for the remake, with Menken set to return to compose the score.[2]
