The New Bauhaus

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The New Bauhaus is a 2019 documentary film about the life and creative legacy of László Moholy-Nagy, directed and produced by Alysa Nahmias.

The film tells the story of artist and designer Moholy-Nagy, who started one of America's most influential midcentury schools of design, the New Bauhaus in Chicago. The school eventually became the School of Design and the Institute of Design at IIT. In 1937, after the Nazis took over Germany, Moholy-Nagy arrived in Chicago along with other displaced Bauhaus masters who found refuge in the United States. They transformed design, photography, and arts education in America.[1] The film includes original interviews, archival, and Moholy-Nagy's words read on screen by curator Hans Ulrich Obrist. The film also features Moholy-Nagy’s daughter, Hattula Moholy-Nagy[2] and artists Jan Tichy, Barbara Kasten, Barbara Crane, Kenneth Josephson, Debbie Millman, and Olafur Eliasson.

The New Bauhaus was produced by Opendox in association with Ajna Films.[3]  It was the opening film at the 2019 Architecture and Design Film Festival in New York.[4] It went on to screen at Chicago International Film Festival,[5] Palm Springs International Film Festival, and other film festivals. The film was favorably reviewed by Forbes[6], Roger Ebert[7], Archinect[8], the Chicago Sun Times[9], among, many other publications. The New Bauhaus was part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art 2020 film series, where it screened December 4th, 2020.[10]
