The Private Lives of Women in Persian Egpyt

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Although the Elephantine texts have been studied diligently by scholars and historians for decades, they may only have unveiled a small portion of what life was actually life in the distant and far Near East. These texts, translated from both Aramaic and Hebrew, have uncovered much of the history recorded of the life occurrences in ancient Persian Egypt. The subject matter, however, is generally related to exploring Jewish history, and the histories and stories of particular families from the past. The papyri give a glimpse into the lives of these people so we may compare and contrast them to our own, and discover more about the long and colorful path of human beings. More recently, these texts have been thoroughly examined in order to discover some of the things that are more important and prioritized in today’s modern age by historians who wish to uncover them. Specifically, Doctor Annalisa Azzoni, Assistant Professor of Hebrew Bible and Ancient Near Eastern Cultures in Vanderbilt University Divinity School, Graduate Department of Religion, and Religious Studies Department. Azzoni spent innumerable hours meticulously examining these texts in order to delve deeper into the realities of the lives of women in particular, living in ancient Persian Egypt. Through various different types of documents, she explores the lives of these women and the multiple perspectives of them. This includes but is not limited to personal letters, legal documents, and texts from diverse sources. In exploring these indentures, Azzoni is able to unveil social statuses, fiscal responsibilities, and the activities within their personal lives. Through this book, she is able to illustrate the notion that women in this era did not live to function in relation to men.
