The Real Black Sabbath is a documentary film directed, written by and starring British filmmaker and journalist Harry Robinson.[3] The film follows Robinson as he interacts with the Oklahoma branch of the Israelite School of Universal Practical Knowledge (ISUPK) and explores their official categorisation by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a "hate group".[4] }}
The film first premiered on 23rd April 2022 at the Oregon Documentary Film Festival[5][6] and won the award for 'Most Inspirational Film'[7] - an award reserved for the documentary category. As a journalism student at the time, this was Robinson's first nomination and first win for his debut film. The film was released worldwide on 20th July 2022.[8]
The film was created whilst Robinson and his cinematographer Adam Dickinson were studying on a year abroad at the University of Oklahoma from their host university; the University of Sheffield. Neither Robinson nor Dickinson had any real filmmaking or cinematography experience prior to filming The Real Black Sabbath and the film was shot on a borrowed Sony FX5 from the university's Gaylord College of Journalism and with a budget of the disposable savings that Robinson brought to the USA with him.[9] In total, only six people are credited on working on the documentary who all belong to Gaylord College - including Robinson himself who directed, starred in, edited and wrote the film.
