The Roman Catholic church of Bükkábrány[edit]

Location[edit]

Bükkábrány [1] was established on 1 January 1950 by unifying Lower and Upper Ábrány. The church lies on the former Lower Ábrány.

History[edit]

During the battle of Mezőkeresztes, the first, former church of Bükkábrány was completely destroyed. In 1686, when Turkish reign had been eliminated, the construction of churches started all over Hungary. In 1740, Komáromy János, the major canon of Eger, started the construction of the new church in Bükkábrány. Local people were so grateful to the builder that the Latin writing above the entrance was carved in the wall in honour of him. This time the church was poor in equipment and furnishing, it took 10 years to provide 2 rows of benches and a pulpit, both in baroque style. In 1869, the church received a main altar and one of the side altars. The pictures of the altars were painted by Sajóssy Alajos, who was an artist from Eger. The main altar depicts the coming of the Holy Spirit, while the side altar portrays Saint Anna and Maria. In 1875, the church was enriched with a wonderful organ made by Angster, an Austrian master. In the XX. century, due to public donation, the church got three bells with different sizes and tones. About 1950 electrification started in the village, so this time works in connection with electrical network in the church was commenced too. In 1962, one of the busiest highways was constructed next to the church of Bükkábrány and led to the continuous ruining of the building. Unfortunately this condition characterises this wonderful edifice even today and still waits for a necessary renovation.
